Why, thats all I ask, why do people do the things they do.
I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation that I'm not aware of and I'll admit my ignorance upon receipt of it. But, at this point, I'm befuddled as to why I found these mods, one on the '97 FZJ80, the other on the '77 FJ45 with the '85 2F engine transplant...
Here is mod one, a valve in line the shuts off flow into the heater core. We have not had heat in the 80. I saw this when I bought it, being a neophyte with such things, figured there was a reason for it. None of those who helped inspected it for me mentioned it so I didn't think about it.
Apparently, it was shut so that we couldn't get heat. I turned it counter clockwise a half turn (being cautious), nothing, went for another full turn and a half, magic...heat. I've become a miracle working to the girls. I can't imagine any valid reason for this to be installed other than a fault somewhere in the heater controls that prevents it from shutting off, canceling out the air conditioner. So far, all seems to operate normally in the first day of operation.
So, all you 80 gurus, please share the reasoning for this modification.
Part 2...
Having some fuel delivery issues with the 45, I came to believe it was the fuel pump. My last ordeal with it lasted until I got it into the driveway. I might have helped it happen by staying hard on the gas and keeping it stuttering. When I pulled in, I jumped out to look into the carb window to see it empty. So, the fuel pump gets ordered and I wait until its decent out to swap it out.
Being the numbnut that I am, I never fully inspected what was already installed. So, today when I get out and prepare to get it done, I notice something familiar with it in that it looks surprisingly like the one I swapped out in the '71 F engine...
Since it isn't the right fuel pump, the PO (or PO to him) routed the overflow/return line from the carb all the way back to the gas tank instead of the fuel pump as the "right" unit has. I also had to replace the line to the carb since the new fuel pump doesn't have fittings for a hard line.
This makes me wonder why someone would install a fuel pump for an F engine onto a 2F. Makes me wonder if this was causing the fuel starvation issues in that it couldn't keep up with the demand of the 2F or if the fuel pump isn't functioning. It pumps a nice squirt load of gas in my direction when I cycled it by hand, letting me know there was still gas in the chamber and it puts out pressure when cycling it by hand.
Took the 45 out for a quick drive and the issue is gone. Hammered the gas through the gears and got it up to 65, no problem. Yet, now it does make clear the need for the carb rebuild, thats set for next weekend.
I'll stop whining now, just makes me scratch my head and wonder why people do the things they do. Yeah, I know that you guys that have gone through these things and rebuilt/repaired/restored vehicles that have been through many hands have dealt with issues much crazier than these.
Just makes me wonder...
