Hey mudders!

Me and my family are attending a wedding in Bend, OR on June 27th and taking the week before to camp and explore the area. I thought this forum might be a good place to get some advice.

We are coming from the Bay Area in CA and heading up the 97. We will want to camp around half way the first night (like around Klamath Falls area), then spend a couple nights around Bend. Can anyone suggest some cool places to camp and areas to check out? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
 
might look into Jackson Kimball State Park just north of Fort Klamath north of kfalls.
a river runs thru it.:clap: $5 fee two years ago.

if you have a mind to...on the way home perhaps...south of La Pine off 97, is hiway 31 to the south east. Oregon Outback.;) Fort Rock, Summer Lake on down to Lakeview. Now, north of Lakeview is Lake Abert and Abert Rim not to be missed...however, if one found their way to Hart Mnt Refuge out of Plush and came to Hot springs campground(free), you would be rewarded with not one but two hotsprings in the campground. bit out of the way...just sayin.:meh:

if youre coming through Klamath I would suggest stopping by the lava tubes. other then that, russ gave you a pretty good line out
 
That looks really cool Ty! Make sure you get pics of some of the highlights and share. Don't break anything. How many days?? You going north and then running it south??
I'd love to take Daphne on that someday.

Since you are coming up 97, I would camp at lake siskiyou in Mt Shasta, about an hour out of Klamath falls.

If you going up hwy 139, I would secon the lava beds south of klamath falls about 30 mins
 
Thanks for everyone's suggestions. For the drive up, it looks like north of Weed on Hwy 97 there is a campsite called Juanita Lake, which would be perfectly located for distance the first day. So right now the plan is stay there the first night, then travel up to the Cascade Lakes Hwy the next day and camp in the area for two nights on the way to Bend.

There are a few campsites to the west of the Cascade Lakes Hwy that are about half way up to Mt. Bachelor: Cultus Lake, Little Cultus Lake, then further in there's Taylor lake. Or it looks like we could take some dirt roads to get over to a couple campsites on the north end of Waldo Lake. Anyone have any opinions on any of those sites or trails in the area? There's also a few campgrounds on the east side of the highway on the north side of the Wikiup Reservoir. Any opinions on those sites or others in that area would be appreciated!

We'd either pack up the next day and make camp the next night further north around Mt. Bachelor, or just hang out and explore the area and then check out the north part of the Cascade Lakes Hwy on the last day while heading into Bend. Around Bachelor, it looks like most car camping sites are right off the road and I prefer to camp away from the road if possible.

We'd like to check out the Newberry Volcanic Monument at some point too. Is that a good day trip to take while we are staying in Bend?

Wikiup reservoir is beautiful my family has been camping there for more than two decades. A few years ago they restricted motor vehicles to above the high water line which makes some of the best camping areas inaccessible by car but there are still some really great places around the lake.

Cool. There's several sites around the reservoir. Do you have a favorite?
 
The spot we used to go is off limits to vehicles now so the last few years we have gone in by boat. You can camp anywhere around the lake though as long as you stay above the high water mark. Look at the water and if there are alot of water plants and such you'll have mosquitoes and leaches so look for areas with a relatively clear beach.

You decide if/where your camping near bend? We are headed up there and going to try for wikiup reaivoir one night, clear lake and any random one we decide to stop at. Maybe we could rendezvous for a night for two. I'll check back here when I can or I'll be monitoring 147.47mhz or any of the bend area repeaters.

I think we are going to try little Cultus Lake on Monday and Tuesday nights. The area is no too huge so if we find a spot we like we will probably stay there both nights. We will be in the area around 1:00 or so and check around before dropping gear. I'd love to hook up. I'll monitor 147.470 and the mt bachelor repeater if I can hit it with my little hand held.
