As some know I am avid outdoorsman...canoeing, camping, hiking, hunting....especially hunting with traditional or primitive bows and arrows. I have been planning a bear hunt for few years that became reality this past week. I left on 30 May for an area near Carrot River, Saskatchwan and returned home Monday the 8th of June.

I got a nice bear...solid black, thick fur, huge pumpkin head that measured 19 inches but will likely dry to around 18.5 or slightly less once cleaned and done losing moisture. The weight was 306 lbs and had almost no fat on the body except for two spots on either haunch about size of my hand and less than 1/2 inch thick. In its prime coat and fat loaded body weight in late FALL it had to weigh over 400 lbs before going into hibernation. :)

I shot it at 10 yards with my recurve and douglas fir arrow I made myself the week earlier. Quite an exciting hunt and one I am very proud.

I came home with a 65qt cooler packed to the top with shoulders, hams, backstraps and the skull. The hide is being tanned by guy up there for me. I am exhausted but elated at same time.... Hunting with a rifle was exciting as a young man.....with a compound as a new archer...but something about getting 5-15 yards from your prey and being able to smell them, hear them chewing and snapping their teeth, and knowing you are within their danger zone....wolf close...where they are most alert. Then being able to take the shot and make it true and quick.....beyond words.

Thought I would share... oh the guide liked Land Cruisers but was partial to Internationals himself so we shared pictures. LOL

Congratulations. The scenting ability of bears is much more than deer, and wise ones will circle the bait before they come in, assuming you were hunting over bait. Bowhunting is a thrill, but that close with a recurve must be exhilarating, something I've never done. I hope you brought home the bear fat, and a few extra pieces of hide for your friends who tie flies. Oh, bring the gall bladder back and take it to an oriental market and that will pay for your next trip...but probably illegal, so never-mind.

I wish I would have known you were going. I've been planning a fall trip to southern SK (Assiniboia) for upland birds for the last 2 years, but the spring has been too wet. I stay in touch with a biologist up there and hopefully they had a good spring hatch. I'd love to hear more and hope you make it to next weekend's HAMOM.

Man! So for a non-hunter like myself, I can't help but think... What is your backup plan if you miss and the bear charges after you? The way you hunt is very cool. My best friend hunts with a compound bow so I'm going to have to tell him to elevate his game!

Your next Land Cruiser shall be named: Stands with Fists.

Or Norman Reedus...

I missed on my first shot...but thing with MOST traditional bows with heavy arrows is that the bows make almost no noise. Compounds and xbows sound like a firecracker exploding. So the bear heard the arrow break as it hit a tree and barrel behind it....and thought it was a limb breaking or something I guess. Never looked my direction. Being stealthy, shooting quiet bow and a scary sharp broadhead all helps. I have seen deer hit that did not know they were shot...double lung shot with no bones hit so they run 15 yds and start feeding again then lay down.. This bear was done in about 10-15 seconds.

dude, that is too cool. I cant imagine the adrenaline rush. :zilla: should be next on the list.

I prefer the Sony ActionCam as it is smaller and thinner for the head mount.....yes I have some video. Lost most of video and pics off my phone of bears and wolves fighting and such...just have the actioncam shots and a few I copied over before flying home when my phone "bricked"

WOW, too cool.

Badass Brock! Thanks for painting a picture of something many if not all of us will never see. Congrats on the bear!

Just saw this Ron after you telling me about it, like how it seems like you are choking the bear out
