Can someone help me translate my smog sticker? I took the Cruiser to a smog guy and he said I need to take it to a referee. All without even looking under the hood or at the door jamb sticker.

It has passed smog everytime and I have not removed anything. It does not have a smog pump nor do I have the rails that jam into the exhaust. And I do have headers.

Comments.

Thanks,

BigJim

The BAR sticker you have says at one time the BAR was satisfied with your Chevota conversion (i.e. all the emissions equipment that was required for that year engine was in fact in place). Now if something was rermoved since then, and the smog test station knows that other equipment should be on that engine, they can require the missing equipment be replaced?????

Did you inform the smog guy that your Cruiser has been certified by the C.A.R.B. with a non-stock engine and you have the decal affixed to prove it?

He may have seen or heard your dual exhaust and got nervous...

Had the same problem with my 78. Had the old style calif sticker like yours. they now require one with a bar code on it, and you can only get it from a referee. In 78 the engine was replaced with a 65 283. only smog was the pcv. Vehicle passed for 25 yrs. 3 yrs ago had to take it to the referee for the new bar code. Refused to issue a new sticker and required all the smog equpment that came on the sbc in 78. Gave me a two page list of all that was missing, and tagged the 40 as a gross poluter. I pointed out that the 65 283 and 327 did not have any of the bolt holes on the heads to mount any of the 78 stuff. His reply was basicly, to bad, you shouldn't have converted to a v8 in the first place. So I moved it to idaho and registered it was no problems at all.

You are going to have to go to the referee.

Since the truck and motor are both 77 you should be Ok. The smog law does say that the motor must be the same year or newer.

As long as the motor has the smog stuff it is supposed to have, the referee will give you a new bar code sticker and you are good to go. The headers may be a problem if they don't have the CARB approval.

The smog laws in this state suck and they really need to bring back the rolling 30 year (or better 20 year) exemption from smog testing. None of the old smog gear works, and so failing a smog test is just a matter of time.

Looks like a carb'd 350 with manual trans. typical smog stuff for a 77, and no CAT

The sticker says at one time it had:
AIS: smog pump & inj. tubes
TAC: thermostatic air cleaner
EVP: fuel tank evap canister
EGR: ...egr

It's not going to pass visual without the evap canister, a smog pump plumbed to exh manifolds, air preheat / stove pipe to air cleaner, thermo-vacuum values (in thermostat housing) to operate the EGR and air cleaner preheat valve. and so on.

If you get it visually correct, that will help a lot. Once they get your number, then life gets harder.

Here's a link that will help. Has the same sticker and list of codes and what they mean.
JTR Chevrolet S-10 Truck . California Smog Laws

It will help to get a 77 Chevy repair manual for vacuum diagrams and pictures of smog equip. Since no CAT is listed it might be smogged as a truck vs. car. I think CA 77 cruisers were no catalyst according to stickers. I spent 3 months getting my first 77 through the process (many trips to the referee). For some reason it was smogged as a car and I needed a CAT.

Hope that helps. Good luck!
