Was reading a thread and it got me thinking. My average trip should actually
have 1-3 oil changes depending on duration. Obviously I don’t do that.
Last trip came home and dumped the oil, it was ugly.
Someone mentioned this particular system. It has me intrigued, and I wanted to run this by you guys.
It’s not initial cost that has any factor for me. I’ve wondered about dual filters, remote filters but this is
first I’ve heard of bypass. In theory it has real merit, so let me know what you think.

BTW, go through the whole site. The opening page isn’t necessarily the one that’s
best.

Just loosen the side lifter cover plate a bit, change your oil filter every 5000 and top up with oil as you need.

Works great for my 2017 dodge pro master. Don’t ever buy one! Mine only has 30,000k on it now and from new it uses 1L of oil for every 2000K. Dodge recommends changing the oil every 12,000. Between oil changes I add about 5L. I usually can tell when it needs topping up starts smelling like hot plastic melting. I believe the emissions crap sucks up oil vapour under load. The ones driven around town don’t seem to consume as much oil, highway driving its thirsty for oil.

Most Tractor trailers, diesel buses and large industrial equipment that has to run for extended periods do use a bypass filtration system.

I don't know what a side lifter cover plate is. I'm also not going to just 'top up as needed'.
I'll do that around town in clean air.
My 12HT uses hardly any oil on these trips. Not appreciably. But the air filter is bagged when I get
home. Literally thousands of kms of dusty roads. That's with a high intake snorkel. Oil looks like tar.
I'd like to see if I can get home with better conditioned oil.

This indicates to me it's a good idea then.

What brand oil/filter are you using? Maybe try the OEM Toyota filter if you haven't tried one yet?

Sorry loosening the lifter cover was meant to be a joke. A couple old bj42 3b’s I have run dripped oil to the point of not needed an oil change just a filter swap and top up. Guess I’m just not as funny as I thought I was..

Aren't you running a diesel? How are you determining your oil is “Ugly” ? After a full oil change mine comes out ugly and black enough after running for only couple times to paint a black hole with.

lf you really must get scientific with this install an hour meter and change the oil every 100 hours or so. Or change your oil at 5000 like everyone else plenty of Toyota diesels lived a long health life with changes less frequent than that, you’ll be fine.

@Rigpig probably knows everything about real machinery oil filtration. I imagine the mine and oil patch equipment gets run hard.

Delivery truck I used to work on had a bypass filter and twice a year we would change/clean it out. the bypass system holds a lot of oil when you serviced it you lost several litres of oil so we never did a full oil change just filled it back up with new oil. Not that I recommend doing that.

Jon, Youll see a lot of marketing propaganda around Bypass oil filters such as 100,000mile big rig oil changes coming out a golden colour. This crap always makes me skeptical, however...

In a case like yours, I can't see it as being a negative in any way. Scrubbing the oil through a 1 or 2 micron filter can't be a bad thing right? I was going to do this on my 3B, I even bought 2 Finning oil analysis kits to compare the results before and after. Unfortunately, I never got around to doing it. The IDI diesels blacken the oil before the starter stops spinning after an oil change and I thought a bypass might help. 12ht might not do this as fast but my guess is it doesn't take long.

I'd be interested in your findings should you go this route.

Does the 12ht dump positive crankcase pressure to atmosphere? (stink pipe) If it sucks that ooze back into the motor you might want to add a catch can as well.

The Franz site has interesting information. Last trip I didn’t change oil just before I left. I’d being
doing all that mucking with the injection pump settings and this new turbo. It might be my
imagination but it seems more susceptible to smoking when I’m going slow and it bogs a bit
more instead of downshifting. I prefer to pick a gear and keep it as constant as possible.

I currently have a long heater hose dump under the frame. I bought a catch can but it’s a bit larger
and I didn’t get it mounted. I am glad that crap isn't going into my intake/turbo any more.

WIX - fundamental aftermarket generic. It’s the same as the NAPA GOLD. I have ordered factory
Toyota filters but they are back ordered. I ordered 12 from Duncan Toyota a couple of weeks ago.
I guess I should call and see if they have arrived. BTW, the price from Toyota is $26. I paid more
than that for a WIX last time.
I usually change the filter each oil change. I also run Semi-Synthetic from Canadian Tire, as I can get
it anywhere in my travels up north. And it gets changed regularly. I don’t factor cost, it costs what it
costs.
Perhaps, the question could be - How many kilometres between changes on a 12HT?

After looking at that Franz site again, I’m trying to figure out how this thing would mount with the factory
set up. Is the secondary filter used inline factory and where in the system does it attach?

Ok, a guy from Nelson mentioned Amsoil. So I found a kit. It’s got an adapter and remote mount.

This looks like it might just do a good job, and it would allow easier accessibility. A guy spends
a lot of time and money on an engine, kind of want it to last as long as possible.

Another thing, maybe allows for more universal filter. Easier cheaper to find? Not necessary but
another consideration

The Bypass systems I like are separate/stand alone.

The Bypass filter will never handle the volume of the higher micron OEM filter. One can tap into an oil pressured gallery (usually a BSP thread) and run a line to the bypass filter mounted remotely on the firewall or fender or what have you. Then the return line goes from the bypass filter into a tapped hole in the engine oil filler cap. I'd have welded a bung to the top of the valve cover and added a fitting for a cleaner look and left the filler cap alone (but that's just me).

So what would be considered an acceptable oil change interval to you guys?
Is the Shell Rosella regular oil? I’ve been using the Canadian Tire Semi-synthetic as its
consistent reasonable price. I had a good talk with PG45er and he made a good point.
Maybe I have too short of an oil change interval in my head. I’ve been thinking 3000 kms,
but even 10000 kms is only 6000 miles. Oil with new filter should be good for that.
what do you guys think?

Don't ever use the Can Tire Semi-Synth oil again! I tried it one summer. I got my engine good and hot towing like I always do, and when I drained the oil at oil change time it came out like WATER consistency. It had completely broken down at a molecular level. It also caused one of my cylinder's piston rings to come in contact with the bore (as the oil had completely lost its lubricating properties.), and loss of compression. All main/rod bearings previously mint had significant wear also. This was my old short block that I replaced a few years ago with a nice better shape one.

In all my years previous (and after) abusing my engine with Shell Rotella Diesel oil (non synth) I've never had a problem. I keep a good eye on my engine/oil and know where things are at. I use 15w40 in the warm months and 10w30 in our southern bc 'cold' months. If I was in the north I'd look at using 5w40 in winter.

I use a Baldwin/Wix filter, but would use Toyota if I could get it easier.

I change my oil every 5000km as my motor is IDI (dirty burn) and does TONS of short trips in town.

If I was to do a long trip up north like you do, I'd be fine going 10,000km before a change. That is a lot of time at constant rpm with engine up to temp - so is much easier on it.

You DON'T have to use the synthetic Shell Rotella, the regular kind is fine. This will save you money. It has stood up in my motor to coolant temps of up to 240F no problem. It's good stuff. Buy at Canadian Tire in 20l pails when it goes on sale.

The crappy tire phone app can be set up to give you notifications when things you want go on sale.

Useful for the things that sell out fast like the 20L pails of rotella.

I bought a half dozen buckets a couple years ago. Some dude right before me bought 20...😲
