ignorant question:
i'm going with the assumption these things are purely vacuum related, but wanted to make sure i don't have to drop the collant before replacing. someone please verify?

any other tips? i'm getting ready to talk to CDan about the parts - let me know if i need anything else to go with them.

coming into the winter skiing season and am trying to avoid any problems with cold starting/driving.

I replaced mine a few months ago. The OEM ones come with some type of thread sealer already on them. I didn't drain my coolant but a lot leaked out until the level was below where they screw into block. It makes a big mess if you don't drain it first. I would drain a couple of gallons out to where it down below them or if you need to replace your coolant just do it all. I paid like around $95 for both.

Have you verified they are bad? The temp. they give in the manual seem to be off some but close. I would have some extra vacuum tubing ready. They are small lines but the old ones might be hard to pull off.

Goodluck

they are currently broken off little nubs of plastic. i've got the [recently replaced] vacuum lines routed onto themselves, avoiding the valves. i knew the little bastards were expensive, but this is going to hurt i think.... as for the coolant, i can't afford to make a mess in the street, so i'll drop a couple gallons into a clean container first.

overall - are these mission critical pieces? i've searched but don't really see if i'm hurting anything by waiting/delaying this fix.

I don't think it will be a big deal to wait. Think they just both help reduce emission while the cruiser is cold. Once the cruiser is warm the valves are open like you have now with the hoses just connect to each other.

they(one of them, forget what the other does) also effect the vacuum advance, it will not open unless at a certain temp, a bad BVSV will(may not) not let the advance work.

yes you will loose some coolent, but not 2 gallons(system holds 4-ish)
