Hey all, long time lurker here. Just recently sold my 5th gen 4runner and am looking for an 06-07 lx470 or land cruiser. I found an lx close to me with 83k miles. The dealer informed me that the timing belt slipped and caused damage to the engine and has been replaced with a new one. (has records, but am worried it may be a used engine) I've got a couple of concerns but am mostly wondering if the trans and drivetrain could be damaged when the timing belt went.

Looking forward to being a long time member here!

I would pass.

The late model 100 should have the oil/brakes/90k(timing belt/water pump) replaced...not much more. I'm confident that you can find a good 100 that hasn't been opened up.

You can search craigslist via searchtempest. This allows you to search multiple cities/states.

Is it a Lexus dealer telling you this or another dealer? I'd probably base my decision on what replacement engine went in it, who did it, and why it needed it. 83k is unheard of for a failure, something happened to that vehicle is my guess (wrecked, submerged, etc). If you are dead set on it, take it to a Lexus or Toyota dealer and let them go through it is my suggestion.

Hello,
As was stated above, whether or not it was a new motor or used would factor heavily. I would not at all be surprised that it was actually a new motor as only the last years of the 100 Series in the US has the VVTi (smidge more power) engine coupled with far fewer 2006 and 2007's being sold than the earlier 100's.

Given the myriad discussion about whether or not the 2UZ is a true interference design (exceedingly rare that a broken T-Belt has caused further damage), this in and of itself is quite interesting. Do wonder if it might have something to do with the aforementioned addition of VVTi with the final years of this Series (1998-2007)

I would not be too concerned about further damage being done by the motor grenading. If not being sold at a Lexus or Toyota dealership, it would be especially well worth having a PPI done.
Best,
Jack

Neglected timing belt service on a late model LX? pass.

Plenty of good examples available.

Thanks for the helpful replies - I'll probably pass on this one. It is from a Toyota dealer but after seeing pictures of the underside, the rust has also become a factor. I'm trying to remain patient while searching for one.

This is probably the hardest search I've had to do for a vehicle.

Be patient. I tracked down my LX, 44 service records, zero rust, timing belt service just done.

These were 70k new, plenty of no-expense-spared trucks on the market. Be willing to wait, and maybe, travel.

After looking at it, I too would cut bait and run. Something about the "gold package" makes my skin crawl as well. That said, it might be worth checking out the documentation of the engine replacement.

With sub 100,000 mile 2006-2007's often listed for upwards for $40,000, the listed price is certainly not bad. Still, when spending that much for a vehicle going on a decade, I would get exactly what I want.
