Well, weather is getting nicer and my son loves bike riding . looking to get a good new bike around the $400- $600 range.

I'm not sure what I'm looking for, the more I read the more confussed I get. I think I want a Hybrid since its lighter than the Mountain style, but looking for advice. I'm a 6.3" guy and about 220 lbs.

I'm planning to take it to easy trails by the beach and around our neighborhood, parks, you get the picture !

Sounds like you're right about the hybrid for you. It's not going to tear up the mtn single track but it will work fine on smoother surfaces. A road bike will eat up the pavement but it will place you in a more bent over position. A hybrid will be lighter and cheaper than the mtn bike in general.

A nice hardtail mtn bike also makes a good casual rider. It will take on gravel and dirt better than a hybrid but may not be as "comfy" in the riding position.

You should go to a dealer and ride them all and see how they fit you.

Good thought !. My wife wants me to go to a Wallmart and call it a day, but not going to happen !

Any brands in mind for that price range?

Thanks for your good pointers !

Most of the major bike companies have a hybrid line now. You will find them from Trek, Specialized, Giant, Kona and others. They all make decent bikes and will be comparable in quality.

Hey Daniel - As Kent said, most of the good bike companies Trek, Specialized, Giant, Kona, Cannondale, Marin and others make good hybrid bikes. I have a few bikes and I like my Marin hard tail mountain bike the best as it isn't too heavy and can still go on mountain trails. I also got both of my kids Marin hard tail bikes. Go to a big bike store - not KMart - and ask what older models (2009 or 2010) they have in stock and you can get a good deal. My Marin was a new in the box 2 year old model that list for $900 that I paid $500. The key is that you get the right size and for that you need to go to a good bike store. To further confuse you the new trend is for 29" vs 26" bikes, which given your height may be best for you. So try several bikes and go with what feels best. Good luck. If you have any questions give me a call.

Instead of a hybrid, I would look into a 29er and spend an extra $30 on a second set of slick tires. DO NOT buy anything from Wal-Mart/Target.

Check out your local MTB forum. Someone in the area has something they're looking to sell, and you'll get a better deal than buying new.

I agree a good deal can be found on a decent used bike.

6'3" 29er sure or get a hardtailed MTB, you may want to head to the hills with the kid.

But would a 29er will weight more than the 26er , right?

Never thought of that, I guess will look further, but have not much time. Most likely will buy it new.

My kid loves to do outdoor activities and a good time for me to exercise.

I'm looking forward to go to the store to try bikes, but got so busy at work for the next 2 weeks and need to wait a little longer !
