Buying a HZJ105, has a turbo installed, what should I look for?

Hello! I've found a '98 Sahara 105 that appears to be in great shape. I'm in SE Asia though, so it's hard to really tell. I'm going to take my local mechanic with me to check it out again, but I wanted to ask for some advice here as well. I'm totally new to Diesel engines, so help me know what I need to be looking for. Here's a few engine pictures:

Questions:
Does this have an added turbo?
Is this the factory engine? (Where is the engine ID plate?)
Do these have OBDii or some other diagnostic port? I have a wifi reader, but didn't notice the standard plug.
What are things I should look for to know the turbo was added correctly?
What are my biggest potential issues with this engine?

It drove smooth, but slow. I've never driven a diesel before, or one with a turbo. But hammering it never gave me that seat-of-my-pants feeling that I get with a gas engine. It needed to shift around 3.5-4k in each gear. I read a few places that the turbo kicks in around 1.5? I never noticed any type of power surge.

I'd honestly prefer one without a turbo, so I'd know what has been done to it. But where I'm at, most have a tranny swap to an automatic and a turbo added, so in glad to find a manual.

Thanks for any and all help!

Sweet, the HZJ 105 is an nonturbo, and the engine looks orginal. (Yes, its slow, but pretty reliable)! :-)
The "engine plate" is the VIN plate you see in right at the picture.
This is the sweet dream to all diesel 80 owners!

My local friend insisted its a turbo. Is there something in the picture that is leading him to say that? Does this look similar to the turbo diesel that the 100's have or something?

From that shot it look like a Naturally Aspirated (no turbo)1hz engine. All Hzj105s are non turbo but sometimes people add one later. And not OBD compatible. A better photo of the r/h side of the engine at the exhaust manifold will reveal all.

Ask your friend to point out the turbo. HZJ105 didn't have turbos, some have aftermarket turbos. The info about the vehicle should be on that body plate on the firewall on the left hand side of the vehicle.
They don't need to be shifted at 4k. They only have about 130HP. You can get away nicely by using the torque and shifting at the correct moment. It takes practice.
The gearboxes in these are fairly crap. Ok on one gentle owner vehicles.
The 105s are good vehicles(except the g/box) and are really an updated 80 series with a wider/longer vehicle. Very popular for desert trips in Australia.
The United Nations and mining companies bought 10s of thousands of them
That ugly fake wood on the dash and steering wheel are aftermarket.

I know it wasn't stock with a turbo, but he thought it was added. I'm waiting on a requested pic from the owner of the side of the engine to confirm.

I didn't know the gear box wasn't any good. This has likely had several owners. But, everything is pretty mint otherwise.

What would I need to check for on the tranny for issues? And what is their main problem?

The R151f boxes are known for being a weak box in the heavy cruisers. Typical 150k - 200k before they go. If its been babied, it may last longer. Check for any noises, hard shifting or excessive backlash when on and off the throttle. The 2 piece main shaft strips out and you loose all drive. Syncros also go. There is an upgrade kit available with a 1 piece main shaft and a few other bits which improves reliability.

Can you link to that? I don't mind having that on hand, if this one ends of being as good as I'm hoping. Mileage is hard here, as just about every place rolls them back. It's showing 86k, which if true would be awesomeness. Inside and out looks and feels low mileage.

1 x Modified Clutch Hub 33362-35030M
3 x Shift Keys 33366-35030
2 x Shift Key Springs 33391-25030
1 x Clutch Hub Sleeve 33364-35050
1 x 3rd Gear Synchro 33368-35020
1 x 4th Gear Synchro 33368-35040
1 x 3rd Gear 33034-60030 (ouch - yes this must be replaced however, the input shaft and output shaft don't need replacing)

All available from Don Kyatt or Driveline with a total retail cost around $770 inc GST.

Now for the interesting part, Don Kyatt's Melbourne head office said that plans were underway to manufacture a fully splined version of the 100 series clutch hub but it won't be available for at least a year.

Other items available to beef up the gearbox are the hardened 1st and 5th gear thrust washers, the metal cylindrical spacer and the fully splined 5th gear.

I was also informed that it may be prudent to replace the retaining plate securing the output shaft bearing - 333151-35020 ($52 inc).

Hope this helps.

All this plus the 1 piece mainshaft. There was gearbox place selling the kit a while ago but I can't locate it atm.

Also www.lcool.org/forums has a lot of good info on this issue, but you must be a member to view the forums.

Awesome, thanks so much for this. It really drove nicely... but as I thought it was a turbo, I kept waiting for some power to kick in! Hoping it works out. In the 100 series subforum I posted about needing to swap the Sahara seats for traditional seats for my kids, so if that's possible this might be "the one".

I have a HZJ105 it's done 350k km plus on the original gearbox. No issues, and not been babied.

If its had a turbo added, does it have an intercooler?
Does it have any extra gauges?

I would be very wary of buying one with a turbo unless you knew it's history and installation details.
The 1hz engine on the HZJ105 have lightweight pistons, they don't cope with turbo ing as well as the older 1hz engines do.
If the turbo install is done carefully, it may be fine for a long time.
If the installer has not covered all bases, you could be buying a ticking time bomb.

Just looked at pictures in your first post. I can't see any sign of a turbo on that engine.

I may be wrong, but it looks like it has the standard air intake piping from the air cleaner across to the aluminium crossover pipe attached to the intake manifold.
