Hi everyone, new here and new to Hilux 4x4´s.
Not new to all-wheel drive, have driven more or less everything 4x4, 6x6 and rubber tracked vehicle that the swedish army has.

I´m looking for a 1986 ifs hilux(1986 for swedish tax reasons, diesel cars pay huge taxes over here, but if it`s more than 30 years old...no tax)

My main goals is: 4x4(of cause), Diesel, as light as possible, and able to use as a daily driver with quite a lot of miles on it.

And of cause it has to look cool also :)

Anyways here´s my toughts:

*1986 Hilux with about 2" lift, Q: best way to do this without putting more strain on the CV´s?

* 2009 or later VAG 2,0L 170hp turbodiesel, BMW 6-speed gear box, NP242 tranfercase(to get both all and part time 4x4).

* 31 or 32x10,5x15 tyres, suggestions on both summer and winter(prefably studded) is appreciated.

* LSD in the rear and air locker in the front.

* Glass or carbon front fenders, hood and maybe door skins, battery and everything that´s possible to move back will be to get closer to 50/50 weight ratio.

Usage: mostly highway, but needs to go everywhere in unplowed small roads, crappy back roads, but no need for a rock crawler.

Suggestions, do and don´ts and general info on these cars is appreciated.

Only 3 hrs. to run out of patience? I think that truck might do everything you want in stock condition. Maybe add some weight in the back, like a receiver hitch and some sliders. Put an LSD in the rear before lifting. Doesn't sound like your truck will need to be lifted. 31" tires, or even 32", should fit on the stock suspension. Any all terrain or winter tire with studs should work well for that season. 22RE is practically a diesel in its operating characteristics, and maybe more dependable and durable. Wouldn't switch it out, unless it's dying.

European Hilux in 86 would be IFS? That's strange because when I was looking at importing from Portugal I could find solid axles up to 93...

I probably don't need either lift or bigger tires, but there's a difference between needing and wanting...
The reason for the modern diesel is that with a diesel price over here around 2.50usd per liter and even more for gas, low fuel consumption is interesting.
That it delivers 350Nm of torque is just a bonus.

As far as I know all hilux has ifs over here from '86 and up.

Ok,

I was probably wrong about the year when the hilux got ifs over here, it seems it was with the 1989 model.
But it seems it was quite popular to import it from US to Sweden so there´s a few 86-88 ifs here anyway.

Ok, so if I want an '86 I have to accept solid front and rear if I don't find a import or do a conversion...
So, how "rough" is a fully"solid" yota?
On a 1-10 scale where 1 is: anything else than offroad is impossible, and 10 is: highway and bumpy smallroads is a delight.
Where is it?, am I a fool if I choose a full solid yota as a daily driver(+20000k per year..)?

If you can, try one out before buying to see if it's for you. BTW, "SFA" is the accepted abbreviation for a Toyota truck with solid axles front and rear. I drove a SFA 4Runner for 10 years, and had no complaints with the ride. It was stock suspension, however, and others may be more picky than me.
The most bulletproof Toyota truck is a well maintained, unmodified one.

I have an 88 SFA Hilux and an 87 SFA Hilux... the 88 has stock springs with a shackle lift and rides like s***, not a comfortable way to get clearance. The 87 although hasn't been tested outside of parking lot speed bumps has a 2.5" OME suspension and rides way better especially with larger tires.

I have no problem with a stiff ride, actually I prefer a solid feel.
As long as it doesn´t tend to "kick back", you all know what I´m talking about, when you sit and get thrown forward by the seat in every bump.
But that´s more up to the shocks I guess? if I got shocks with good rebound dampening this wouldn´t be a problem?
