Lots of awesome trailers here and it's inspired me to do a little bit of trailer work on my own. I've got the design for my trailer frame (friend will weld it), but I'm not sure what to do about an axle.

I've found a couple of places where I can pick up a trailer axle kit with all the bits and bobs fro about $250 shipped.

But I was thinking, why couldn't I just use an old truck axle?

Is there any reason this couldn't be done? I could probably find one with the same lug pattern as my rig, which would be handy and convenient, and I bet it would be a lot cheaper.

Anybody have any experience with this sort of thing? Or have any input/ideas? I'm not much of a mechanic, this is all pretty new to me. So, any input would be helpful. Thanks!

I'm not sure what state you are in but some will not allow you to use a car axle on a trailer. It is worth doing it right the first time.

You guys are right, I'll just hit up ABC Trailer Parts. It's probably not worth saving a buck when I can get a known quality set of parts.

Use a pair of spindles from a Toyota front diff. Bolt them to plates welded to your axle tube.
leave the rotors bolted to the hubs and finish them off with locking hubs.
Now you have spares for your rig should you need them.

Really? Have you done that? That was my plan until I really looked into it. Post up pics of your project.....................including the use of the front spindles.:hmm:

Yes i have done it, a few times.
I have since sold them but i'll see if i can't dig up a pic for ya.
