Not sure why this happened but the tie rid end on my recently acquired BJ74 just snapped clean yesterday. Luckily just was dead slow at the time . Its the end that that connects to the steering box arm.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this before ?

They do break, but usually when offroad. It was either worn out or was a rather nasty and cheap part someone has put on there.

Hi All:

To add to what RoscoeFJ73 wrote, I have seen that same sort of break occur when the tie rod end (TRE) stud did not have the proper taper to match the hole in the pitman (steering box) arm.

The hole in the pitman arm for the TRE is not a straight hole, but tapered. If the taper of the stud on the TRE does not match, the TRE stud will move around, eventually causing failure.

Regards,

Alan
