First pic was a good bearing from Cylinder #4

Can someone give me some pointers on how to get alot of images on this site easily? I keep exceeding my quota of space even tho I've resized the images smaller! I want to share the carnage with you guys!

Actually I don't test mine! I know it works because we do ALOT of long distance travelling and in the states where they are unfamiliar with the 3B they generally ignore my insistence of 6.5 - 7 quarts of oil when I get an oil change even though I have the OEM shop manual. They always put in a little less and then.... the low oil cutoff shuts down the engine! They ask why and I tell the dumb asses that they need to listen to the customer a little better and they top off the oil!

You can test it though by grounding out the lead to the low oil cutout. It'll tell you that everything works except for the sensor itself. You can ONLY test that by having a low oil situation.

Cruiser_guy,

Is there a way to test the low oil cut off on my cruiser? Just because the edec is designed to shut off the engine does not mean it could be working when the oil goes low. I was once a Heavy lift helicopter mechanic and the first things a pilot does before starting up the engines or lifting off is he test everything there is or look at the master caution panel BEFORE the engines are started or rotors are turning. How many of us neglect to read the idiot lights in all the cars we own to see the oil pressure light was not lit? I dont see this in my bj-60 but it should have been included when assembled at the factory.

Is there a kit on the market that would send a audiable warning if water or oil goes low? I had a unfortunate example of having the stereo to loud in my thunderbird and did not know it was leaking water and heard this knock knock knock comming from the engine. I turned down the radio and engine temp was sky high. There was no flashing light or warning sound to tell me in advance this was happening when I was more in tune with my driving and stereo. My thunderbird blew a head gasket. Anyway, This 3b engine is just WAY to expensive to have only a temp or oil gage. Looking for somonething to send a audiable warning which will shut off after the oil pressure comes up then shut the engine down. If anyone knows of anything let me know.

Sean -- you mention at the beginning of this thread that you had just had thousands of $$$ worth of work done on your BJ before this trip. Was anything done to the engine that could explain some of this? Just a thought...

Brendan,

Um... you asked what could I have done that would have caused all this? I think that when you refurbish the top end of an engine you should also refurbish the bottom end of the engine. I fixed up the top end and this forced the bottom end to work hard.

Sean.

Yeah.. but refurbishing (which included ??) the top end and losing oil pressure and overheating the bearings doesn't usually coincide...

sean allen,

I dont mind helping you with anything you need. While I am not a expert diesel tech I have worked on tons of gas vehicles. I personally need some experiance on these vehicles should I be put in the same situation you are in. BTW does anyone know if there is a low oil pressure warning buzzer for these vehicles? you can email me direct at pcsupportatshawdotca

I also own the 3b and need a valve adjustment. Have you done one of these?

chip detector in oil pan.

Aircraft have lots of warning instruments and lights to notify the aircraft might be in big trouble so it gives the pilot a chance to get it on the ground asap. One thing comes to light and it may be very cheap to install. If all the bearings have steel in them then a chip detection circuit could be installed. How it works is if oil return that is pouring near a chip detector picks up metal in the oil a master light comes on. We use these in gear boxes and engines of helicopters and I asume of fixed wing aircraft. If a vehicle had one of these mabey it would give the owner enough advance to shut the engine down before more serios damage could be done. If it never goes off great! the engine is in perfect running order. If it does go off check the size of the chips. If its grey matter that is probebly micro sized fillings and is possible normal wear. If thay are larger chunks, shut engine down and inspect bearings.

Cars were never designed for this because it was assumed you were on a road with other people or on a highway and can be easily towed to a shop. If you are out in the middle of no where land this advanced warning might give advanced notice and replace the offending berring in the lower end if possible before more damage results. Then again, all of thise may not be nessesary. Dont know the total history of these engines and mabey thay have never had a berring fail on them in the field. Anyone care to give there input do so.

yes your low oil pressure sw goes opens and the edic shuts the engine down.

hows that for a buzzer?
