Hey guys, wondering if someone can provide some insight here, I did search but am still confused. I'm finalizing my brake parts list so I can order through Beno. What I'm having a hard time deciding is whether or not I'm gonna need the anti-squeal shims for the front and rear? they definitely cost more than pads!
Here's what my situation is: brakes have been squealing when coming to a stop ever since about a year ago when we were coming down this very long, very steep hill with 7 passengers after driving through dusty conditions. My thoughts were that we "glazed" over the pads and that was causing the noise since there was plenty of meat left on the pads. I finally got sick of hearing it (I don't drive it much, it's the
mobile and she doesn't say anything) in August and took the front calipers apart to see if something was up.
First off, the LC has some crazy brake pad backing plate system. I found that both front wheels had one broken tab on the smaller "slip-on" clip (the skinny ones in the pic below). Obviously I thought this must be the cause of the sounds since it can now vibrate due to not being fully clipped in. Went to NAPA and picked up the front brake caliper hardware kit:
i put it all back together with the same pads since they have lots of meat, the new metal retainer plates, and what i'm assuming is the "anti-squeal shim" (it's a black piece of plastic/delrin looking material that goes between pad and metal retainer plate). i sprayed some of that blue disc brake quiet stuff between all surfaces and put anti-sieze on my dry, oxidized caliper pins and moving parts. Well, none of this solved my issues with squeaky brakes. Thing to note: in the pic above/NAPA kit, there is the "M"-shaped deal - when I took my brakes apart this was NOT to be found anywhere, so I didn't put it in as I don't know where it goes and I don't have the FSM, just basic knowledge of how brakes go together from doing it on other vehicles - what is it and is that my issue?
So...I'm just going to do a full brake job with new Toyota pads and hardware, and might have my rotors turned at a local Riebes machine shop. I already have a set of front pads, but the rest of my order from Beno is this:
- front brake pad support plates: $1.91 (SPECIAL ORDER)
- rear brake pads: $58.49 (IN STOCK)
- rear brake pad support plates: $7.36 (SPECIAL ORDER)
- anti-squeal brake shim kit (F/R): FRONTS: $51.56 (SPECIAL ORDER)/REARS: $28.56 (IN STOCK)
Before I finalize my order I'm wondering if someone can confirm what these brake shims look like, 'cuz I can't find a pic of them anywhere. And if in fact these shims are the plastic/delrin plate between the pads and support plate, why can't I re-use my old ones since they're fully intact? Is there more in the kit than those plates?
I saw THIS thread regarding shims and there was this pic in it and I don't recall any of the clips looking like these nor the shims looking like those pictured either:
