so on my 98 4 runner I changed the pads and rotors because my steering wheel was shaking when I hit the brakes.... so it was good for a little while now it is doing the same thing... is there a possibility that my pads are rubbing and warping the rotors??? caliper not backing off a bit??? how can i find the problem?

How long is a while? Rotors are a bad spot for those 4 runners. Cut the rotrs and the brake drums. Drums are kinda bad bout warping/getting out of round also. ck last month issue of 4wd toyota owner also. article on upgrading to Tundra brakes

Does it drive without any shaking normally? I have a bad rim and if I put it up front I really notice it when I get on the brakes.

Usually a bad rear drum will just give you a shudder when braking and a bad front rotor will be felt in the steering wheel when braking.

When you gently apply the brake does it pull to one side or the other... usually the direction it pulls points to the problem side.

When you apply the brakes and let off does it continue to pull to one side or the other?

I would say a week maybe... I drive all highways so dont use much breaks...... drums are fine in rear only happening in front stuff... yea I heard about the tundra upgrade.... just dont really want to spend that much $$ or deal with the hassle of finding used junk.... just lazy I guess :D.... I did price out new calipers yesterday... maybe I will call and see what the difference between them and tundra junk

Yup

I dont really notice that... I will try tonight and see if that is so light I dont notice it.

for sure not this

just called parts store... for tundra set up new junk.... $370.00 about.... they need some casting number off the back of the calp however.... I will look more into that... to do the same thing with the 4runner junk is about $250.00 so really not that much big of a deal to upgrade... and that is all new or reman parts

Same year Tundra as the 4Runner? I'm having the same problems, especially when loaded up and driving down the mountains. Terrible vibration. Would appreciate that casting number RE the calper.

no.. .my 4runner is a 98 dont think they made a tundra that year.... I got a tundra sitting in the garage so if I can not find any casting number I can look at that...

of course I'm old school but I think you can still check the run out on a rotor with a dial gauge and see how bad it is. Can always turn them if they are excessive..although if you installed new ones this would seem odd to have excessive run out already.
If you looked at your new pads and rotors you should be able to see what is wearing from new. Both sides or what exactly is going on.
Make sure the caliper assembly can move easily enough.

Quit buying aftermarket junk.

done literally dozens and dozens of brakes on all kinds of vehicals for many many years.... never ever have I had to buy pads and rotors from a dealership...... I dont buy or cheap out on anything I do... so your post may be correct answer in this case, based on what others have also posted, but had you posted it as you did, I would infact have call you a dbag! and not put much thought into it.... but thanks .... two thumbs up dude!

I have no idea what u just said.... But I've done hundreds (yes hundreds) of brake Jobs on tundras tacos and 4 runners that wouldn't have been needed if aftermarket parts weren't put on the rigs. Les schwaub is great for this problem.

I was typing on my stupid phone when I wrote that, so short replies are the norm in that case. :)

do you know what the cost is for the toyota junk? do I need both rotors and pad to be toyota?

what is the difference between OEM and after market in this cast?

I am a knob who is this Les Schaub you speak of?

thanks!!! :bounce:

Cost..... Iunno. Around 65 for the pads?
The difference is in the pad material (and some cases the pad backing plate fitment)
I can't say what the difference is. Just that there is one. I want to say they're too hard. Lots of the aftermarket pads just warp the shut out if the rotors in a very short time.

ok so at this point my new rotors are shot... so is it the pad or the rotor or do I just call my toyota dealer and order both? so if I just order the parts there is not a differnce in pads where I need to order one or the other right??

If you order them from the dealership, there should be only one option.

IF there is a second option, that is still a toyota part, it will be a "performace" type of pad that tpypta has just recently come out with.

If you don't have your stock shim kit anymore, it'd be a good idea to get a new shim kit.
It's kinda spendy, but makes a hige difference in noise.

If you buy from a local dealer, try to find one that will give you 25% off. If not, you can always order from Cdan. or any other TLCA member vendor.

I order all my junk through cdan

i did the tundra brake upgrade for my 98. didnt use oem, but quality aftermarket stuff. i used pads and calipers (199mm) from akebono and brembo blank rotors. sourced for a 2000 tundra V8 4X4.

you should be OK with quality reman'd stuff. just send back your runner calipers for cores. pads and rotors are comparable prices to decent aftermarket stuff, but the calipers (up here anyway) were mucho $$$$ so i went with reman'd stuff.

no more wheel shake under heavy braking.
