Hello all,
I have been riding my 40 around my neighborhood and have decided that 4 wheel disc brakes upgrade would be a nice upgrade. I have been doing some research and have finally found a rear disc brake kit. What I need is a shop that could handle this type of conversion. Does anyone know a shop that could do this type of work on my 69 40?
I already have front disc brakes but they basicly dont work. The truck roll to a stop. I want to be able to drive the truck on the road once in a while at a little faster than 15 miles per hour and be sure that I will be able to stop at a red light or stop sign , right now it wont stop if I dont decelarate way way before needing to stop.
So any help, info, comments on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Del, where are you located, this is not a very tough project and can be done in a few hours on the rear. I'd be willing to lend a hand if you were interested in coming down to Cary, NC sometime. You will need to replace your master cylinder with a newer style cylinder but again not a huge issue. Where have you found the kit?

Im in Sanford NC.
WOW!!!
Thanks for offering to help with my brake issue. I found a kit at TSM Brakes. I also found alot of info on mud. I guess guys are buying premade brakets and using monte carlo calipers with chevy truck rotors that are machined in the center to make wider.

I am not sure what parts I would need so for me the kit (although more expensive) might be the way to go. That way I get everything I need.

Im mechanicly inclined and all but I dont have that many tools. I am sure that with help I, we could knock it out in a day.

I would be willing to drive to Cary to get some help with this issue. It would be more satisfying if I did the work myself anyway.

By the way I am trying to get the 40 fixed up so I can make it out to one of your clubs outings and possibly join.

Thanks

DEL,

Just put your 40 in Neutral and roll down the hill. I bet you could make it without even turning on the ignition. I should have everything you need. I can't think of any specialized tools.

We have two other Cruiser heads in the nieghbor hood. The SGM that bought mine down near Carolina lakes is doing a complete frame off rebuild, if he is watching the thread might be willing to help and there is antoher guy that FINALLY picked up his BJ42 from M&B auto that should be posting up.

None the less. Just let me know if you want to come over and do the work. All you would need to bring is a large fan...hot as $hhhhit in my garage.

Edit I have three extra boosters and master brake cylinders in my garage..two hydroboost and one vaccume. Don't know if we can make them work but with a little research it might save you a few bucks. If not the best place to get parts in this town is the Spring Lake Advanced. They have a huge inventory they can usually get you a part by the next morning at 1000.

Also depending on your crazy fab skills I have a set a Huge set of 4 piston callipers that were on my 56 front end before I threw the crown vic front end on the truck.

I went through the same but with Greg and the rest of the club's help, went with FJ40 parts from a newer model that comes with front disc brakes (I didn't do discs for the rear, finding it unnecessary). I hosted a HAMOM (Help A Member Out Meeting) and we got the job done successfully in about a half day of work, followed by some burgers/chicken and an adult beverage or two.

We are having one tomorrow at a member's home where we are rebuilding two FJ80 front axles, look at the sticky thread above for details, I'm sure you'd be more than welcome to come by, meet the crowd, get some grease under you fingernails and see what might be involved with your project...

Just to post it up here. My 40 has drum brakes all around, and other than some yahoo stopping short in front of me, I have no issues with drums. I need to adjust them, way overdue, but it sounds like you have other issues with your brakes. Now, if you're just biting the bullet and not putting anymore money into the drums, and switching to disc, than I understand. As I'd love to do the rear disc first, but not until my drums are toast and I've gotten my money out of them!

Edit: Just reread and saw you had front discs... Seems they need some tweaking!

Might be something as easy as a proportioning valve. I agree. I have drums in my truck and discs on the front of all 3 of my rigs and they all stop fine (minus my land cruiser)...what the heck is the deal with these land cruisers..I've adjusted mine, bled mine and it still doesn't stop worth a darn. I actually think the problem is a leaking brake cylinder which basically renders one of the rear drums 0% effective, means I'm really at about 75% brakes and that beast needs every bit they can get.

I would be interested in swinging by to meet a few cruiser heads in the area.

I have had a few early days this week so I have been driving it around the neighborhood. Thanks for the offer. We really need to get together one of these days and do some wrenching or drink a few cold ones. I have one day weekends for the next few weeks but after that we should plan something. I wouldnt mind driving over to the HAMOM being held tommorrow to get to know some of the guys in the club. you interested?

Yeah, I was thinking of going to Uwharrie this weekend with another member but he has not posted back up so I don't think he is going. My rig hasnt' been battle tested yet so I would never go alone. I need to look up Ramon's address but he can't be to far up there. No AC in the Cruiser but we could Hop in the 62 and head up for the day and help out. I would probably rather do that anyway then wheeling. I like working on them more than I do driving.

Give me a ring fifezerotree 544 seventreeonetwo. I don't know why people usually put their numbers out this way but creative non the less. I don't how bad phone number stealers are to want to search forums for numbers...i'm on the fedearl no call list anyway.
