Looks like this is the location of the valve on my '94 and the nut holding the metal piece in front of the valve/grommet needs removal to take the old one out? From what Rich P. suggested and more research, this check valve is likely the culprit to my hard brake pedal that comes and goes.

To all, and especially Rich P. @rpfzj80, thanks for the feedback at one of the club meetings on my braking issue. Installed a new brake check valve and replaced the hose and clips too. Toyota hose was more expensive than the valve itself!

SOLVED the hard brake pedal feel completely. Extra reading, etc. here and on web convinced me the hard pedal feel was from an intermittent failure of the brake check valve at the brake booster and not the ABS (whew!). It was unnerving driving the beast and not knowing when I'd get a hard pedal or not braking. It'd still stop but you had to put your foot into the braking.

Easy to loosen the nut that holds the plate that holds the valve in place. After 28+ years I did spray that nut/bolt with a little screw loose a couple of days ago and it came right off. 12mm nut and not the Toyota standard 10mm. Shocking!!! Old valve came out with a very little careful persuasion and then the rubber grommet came right out. One right up said to be careful taking the old parts off so you didn't bend the brake booster itself - that's a $612 part!! I was worried that the grommet might be hard as a rock as old at it was. Still pliable after all these years and all that heat from the engine.

Well...I may have spoken too soon and the run around the block to test the new valve wasn't long enough.

Went on a longer drive and hard pedal was still there. More reading says it could be air in the brake lines or worse the brake booster failing
That part is $600 !!!

At least you got a new valve. Did you check the vacuum hose to the brake booster? It could have some cracks in it from age.

I replaced the old hose with the valve too. It was old and cracking.

Last drive I had no assist at all!

Taking it into Caesar at Cruiser Tech Thursday.

You are a brave man with strong legs to have been driving around with beforehand. Must be a golfer’s thing!
You aren't kidding. Both feet on the brake pedal the last two trips. Scary!!! Truck would stop with full attention to effort on the brake pedal!!!
