Been getting a LOT of brake rotar noise recently...I'm pretty sure it's not the brake pads since it's not when I'm applying the brake, it's when accelerating or coasting, when I come to a complete stop the noise goes away...I have around 21k on my FJ, any ideas? Anything I can spray on these to quiet them down? (I hate going to the stealership)

I did find a service bulletin, but it is seems to be a problem while backing up. Heck, I would claim the problem just to get free rotors, pads and calipers to see if it cures the problem. Here is the TSB #:

BR005R-07 SEP 07 Brakes

Check your dust covers (sheet metal behind rotor) i tweeked mine when doing my lift and had to re-align them.

how would that sheet metal make any noise? It dosen't come into contact with anything?

Took it to the Dealership and dropped her off...told them about the rotors\brakes also gave them that service bulletin #, also told them to find out why the pulleys are making noise and why my passenger seatbelt won't loosen up (messed up). Told him to CALL me if he can't reproduce any of the noises.

Didn't get much done...they said they'd replace the seatbelt unit, and apparently at 20k my brake pads are worn down to almost metal on metal....shows you how I drive I guess. I'm going to get them to drop in ceramics. I'm guessing it wasn't the rotor then and it was in fact the brake pad, because even when coasting with a worn pad it can "scuff" the rotor when spinning. So we'll see! Going back today at 8 A.M.

Tell them you want to the old pads (just for your own edification). Always ask for the old parts when you can. It forces them to prove they did the work WHEN it was necessary. If you still have a noise, then you know that it wasn't the pads. I had a rotor dust cover that was bent by the dealer when they did a rotation/oil change and it sounds like metal on metal grinding/squealing. You can get under the truck and pull it out (towards the differential) to get it off the edge of the rotor.

I've got a horrible noise coming from my breaks as well when we're wheeling..they moan. Sounds like the Jaws theme song... duuuu dum duuuu dum... kind of embarrassing really.

Edification? It's pretty obvious they replaced the brakes. And they also re-surfaced the front rotors. One of the most noticeable things when you get new pads is the smell if you get next to the wheel after you've been driving it for awhile....whew. I know they didn't bend anything, since it's the exact same sound which singles out the rear-rotors. It's really NOT a bad sound (nowhere near as bad as squeaky brake pads) but it's just a little nusance...I'll jack the car up when I do some more caliper pianting and take a look at the rotor to see if it's smooth enough.

Did they eat the cost, or .....?

Brake pads are not under warranty...don't think any company out there sells a car with pads under warranty. So no.

20K and they were almost gone?
Wow...

Yes, either you are a hard driver, or something was wrong.
I just went in for my 15K service over the weekend, and I have:
90% on the front
95% on the rear

Everyone I know said they weren't surprised...I do drive the FJ very fast and brake very hard. My rears though are just likes yours. Almost no wear at all O.o. I was going to switch to ceramic pads, but like I said, everyone there said they were louder, which is why I didn't.
