Driving over speed bumps ive been hearing a rattle in my front end. Dropped skid plate and Jacked up both sides today and checked out obvious culprits, shocks, swaybar, tie rod ends, ball joints, etc. Greased driveline while i was under there. Went to the high school and drove over speed bumps. While rolling over bumps, when no brakes applied i can hear rattle, when i apply brakes over bump, boom!, no rattle. Im assuming this is something to do with the pads slapping the rotors or something of that nature? Let me k ow what you think.

You might need these little springs...

Did this make yours have a rattle? Is that just a plate over the caliper or what? I guess i would just need to pull tire off and take off the plate and see if there is a spring or not? Right.? Thanks bud.

You may be missing an anti-squeal shim and you definitely don't have the anti-rattle spring. @brianrride, I've never seen two springs on a single caliper. Like the photo below, I only have the lower one.

@scwill, I'd pull the pads and see what you're dealing with. You may simply have to clean up the mess from a prior brake job (had to do the same with mine).

@scwill .... you absolutely NEED the anti-rattle spring on each front brake. They are $10 for 2 from Toyota dealers and super simple to install (don't even need to take the wheel off). My front end rattled like crazy over bumps and I thought it was a heat shield. But, it would not rattle at all if the brakes were activated. I looked and was missing those springs. Added them in less than 5 minutes and BAMMM....no more rattle!

Oh yeah, AutoZone, O'Reilly's and NAPA all carry those springs as well. Several here in Austin had them in stock.

I know I’m reviving an old thread here, but we changed the front rotors and pads on my 100 series 4 days ago. Tonight was the first time I noticed it, but after going over some gravel lots and the kids ballpark off 290, it sounds like a lot of rattle/clanking coming from my front passenger wheel. Then a few minutes later the driver side was doing it too. Checked all bolts and everything appears tight…we just didn’t put these clips back on.

You mentioned being able to do it without taking the wheel off. What was your approach? Hearing it took you five minutes, gives me hope that this won’t be a pain in the ass and I won’t have to jack the entire front end up to do it.
