Hey guys,

I'm pretty new at the Toyota front, as I mentioned in my introduction post , I found an old BJ 70 in my garage in Africa.

I've been pretty successfull at restoring it, however there is one issue that keeps hauting me. The brakes need pumping before they actually work. If not and I slam on the brakes, it all locks up and I start sliding like I'm driving on oil.

3 different local mechanics have looked at it, and all change the master piston or sealants, however this fixes it for a few days and then back to normal. Anyone have any ideas?

alternatively, how much would it be, if I just throw it all out and have a new system installed (including pads and everything?)

Which brake configuration does your BJ70 have?

I would suspect that it has the standard disc front and drum rear. A common cause of having to pump the brakes is poorly adjusted rear brakes. This can be complicated by things like improperly set up parking brake cable and linkages, leaking wheel cylinders, poorly adjusted or worn out LSPV.

On an older vehicle, there can also be complications relating to how someone may have messed around with the braking system in trying to piece it together with inappropriate parts or 'bailing wire' fixes.

Just had the same problem on an 87 bj70 (front and rear drums). Our solution was to adjust the pads until the drum barely goes over the pads.. We had one piston in the front left brake that was frozen, caused uneven ware.. Once they were all equally adjusted, problem solved.. Also remember to bleed rear to front..(diagonal to the master cylinder is first to be done)

Funny to read that! I just fixed a similar problem last week-end by adjusting my rear parking brake linkage. One of my rear brake pads was «too far» from the drum, thus requiring more pedal pump.

... So, this proposal have my vote !
