Sometimes when I apply the brakes the pedal seems to get hung up on something.
I've looked at the pedal and linkage and it is nothing external, but I still feel a resistance that can vary in strength. it is easily overcome but I get the feeling that all is not well in the MC or maybe the vacuum booster.
I've never had power brakes before.

Any ideas?

Does it still have the original MC?

Sound like you may be running out of vacuum check all the rubber lines from alternator to vac tank and return to master-cylinder you may have a leaker.

I think the MC is the original, I'm not sure how to identify an original.
I'll check the vacuum lines.

Either it is the original MC or someone replaced it with a very rusty newer one.

Vacuum lines SEEM okay but I can't say for sure.
I'll take the line off at the booster and plug it to see how much of a difference it makes.

I had the exact same problem with the exact same symptoms and based on my solution the problem isn't vacuum and your booster is probably functioning normally. The issue is with brake pad placement (or in this case displacement) on your rear drum brakes. For the lack of a better description, the framework that holds the brake pads in place can bend which allows the pad to "lean out" from its normal location. The "hung up" feeling is the resistance from the pad until it pops back in place.

Is this something to just confirm and then live with?

In theory I guess you could live with it but I'm much happier now that the situation is corrected and the brakes feel and perform normally.
