I just bought a pair of 5 1/4" NX57 speakers for the front doors of the 80.
Anyone know if they will fit???

I read the past posts on Boston speakers.
As for quality, the Bostons I had in the 60 (they are in the KW now) sound GREAT and they were make in the USA.
The new ones I have are made in Malaysia.
The sales man says Boston only makes speaker parts in the USA for the high $$$ speakers now.

What are the dimensions? Especially the depth?......Almost any speaker will fit there, just depends on if you are going to try to get them behind the stock grills or not.....

How much for the pair? I just ordered the oft discussed Eclipses....

They were about $150.
The box says 2 1/8 mounting depth.
I want to use the the stock grill.

Never heard of bostons. I had some memphis speakers though. Sounded real nice.

2 1/8" top mount or bottom mount? I think they might be a little deep to run under the factory grills. I was thinking the max for under the grill was just under 2" but I could be mistaken. My advice would be to take them back and get the 6.5" and mount them on top.

I think the Eclipses just barely fit behind the grill, will know more in about 2 days. They are only 1 5/8" deep IIFRC......

There are a bunch of write ups about speakers if you just type in Eclipse and search the 80s forum.

If you do go surface mount instead, I'd 2nd the motion to go with bigger ones as well.....But I am sticking with the stealth stock look, and as far as I know, Eclipses and maybe Infinity reference or maybe Kappas are the only ones, unless some new ones came out....

I just installed the Eclipse 8243/8353 last weekend. These are the speakers mentioned in numerous other threads. I was able to mount all 4 speakers, under the factory grills. The fronts went in without any modification at all. The rears required some cutting of the factory mounting bracket, but it was a  job. The improvement (still using the stock head-unit) was amazing. Some have mentioned disconnecting the tweeters in the dash, but I think they sound fine. FWIW, I was able to source all 4 speakers for $100 total at a local shop, so this is a very inexspensive upgrade indeed.

Tried Bostons and if you want to use the stock grill they won't fit. I ended up with the Eclipses as well. I'm not sure but I think that even if you used the grill included with the Bostons they may not fit. I think they might have hit the dash . . .

They would probably fit in the back with the Boston grills. . .

Since I was the original person that recommended the Eclipses, I will remind everyone that there is an additional important reason that I recommend them besides their mounting depth and good sound quality for the price. The entry level eclipses are a very efficient speaker, approx 96db/w compared to most coaxes now being in the 89-92db/w range. In order to get a 3 db increase in sound level you have to double the power to the speakers. Given the stock amps limited power, you will be getting the same max volume with the eclipses as you would by doubling to quadrupline the stock amp power and using a less efficient speaker.

Cary, I have read all of the threads and posts, but I either didn't see or missed the following....

I imagine getting to and disconnecting the front tweets should be fairly easy. Do you think it necessary to disconnect the rear tweets as well? Do you know where those wires are ran or do those come off without getting behind the headliner?

And and in case I haven't totally highjacked this thread, I am also considering an Infinity BassLink, which I think will accept 4 high output leads into the unit.....Can I use the ones going to the rear tweets? I think there was mention of those wires being parallel to the rear doors.....

An anyone else have the basslink? Interested in where you mounted it. I took out the 3rd row seats, and have installed a pet barrier (not for pet use, for package missile protection) and think it will fit pretty nicely in the center between the two supports up against the back of the 2nd row....

Rambling while waiting on Eclipses to show....

I don't remember how I did it, but the front tweeters were very easy to unplug. The rear speakers in the roof are a pain and cannot be removed without damaging the grills (unless someone figured out how to recently). For the sub, you would want to take the lead off of the factory "sub" on the right rear, or from the wiring harnes behing the glovebox.

Carry,

I check Eclipse-website and they only claim 90 Db sensitifity. Everybody online listed eclipse as 94-96 Db sensitity. Maybe Eclipse rateunder rated all of their speaker. Elipse-Web.com

I went with Alpine with 92 Db sensitifity and they basicaly s**k with stock stereo.

At the stero store they had Eclipses and Boston. The Boston sounded life like.
The Eclipses were louder than the Bostons at the same volum level but sounded more tinny. But they were alot cheaper than the Bostons. I don't know what model they were though.

But as the Bostons don't fit up front I may go with the Eclipses.

Yeah,, I suggest disconnected those rear tweets in the cargo area, they sound like crap, especially if you have an aftermarket head unit or amp.

They are a reeeeal pain. I pulled some of the surrounding panels to sneak the tweet out from the backside, clipped and capped the wires, done deal.

Eclipse has changed the sensativity of the newer speakers (or revised them) as the older 2ways I had were 96 db per the box and brochure. They work well with the limited power the stock head unit has.

It doesn't appear anyone with the LX system has chimed in here. I'm wondering if any LX guys have done this upgrade and if the difference is as substantial as it appears to be for the LC boys. I know the LX system is suppose to be a little bit of an upgrade over the LC's, but not sure where. If I recall, the door speakers on my LX looked like some of the run of the mill paper crappolas used on most stock vehicles.

Thanks,
Rookie2
