Went out with my Pop to Borrego Springs to hang out and do a little wheeling. We do an annual trip together that used to be motorcycles but is now including taking the Cruiser out.

We arrived on wed at lunch time and stopped in to the BLM office to get some recommendations and check for trail closures. He tried to sell me on the “tourist friendly” trails. I tried to explain that I was looking for something with a little challenge but not too crazy as we were solo. After several failed attempts I finally told him “I drive a locked Land Cruiser on 35’s”, at which point he finally told me I could go on any of the trails but to stay on marked trails. :grinpimp: I assured him I would and we were off.

We decided to run Lower Coyote Canyon up to see Bailey’s Cabin where the trail closes to vehicles but the trail was completely washed out around Middle Willows. We took the loop around Collins Valley by Sheep Canyon campground on the way back through. Not difficult but nice scenery with a few interesting rocky sections thrown in. It has been 13 years since I last wheeled this trail and I still remember the creek Crosing that is like a tunnel, very cool.

After lunch we back tracked and ran out to Calcite Mine Rd east of town out S22. The trail head is on the north side of the S22 just west of a large red microwave tower between mile markers 38 and 39. It is hard to see but they have a sign there that is visible. If you pull off to see the sign you will see the trail head. It is only about 1.5 miles but it has great scenery and lots of canyons to go up and down. We timed it to be at the top about sunset and the view is incredible. The late afternoon lighting made the various rock formations really jump out.

Great laid back day of wheeling and nothing you couldn’t do in a stock Cruiser.

I shot about 125 pictures and some are pretty cool. If anyone is interested they are here.

1. Pop and I at the signpost for Alcoholic Pass Trail, how could we not stop for a pic? FYI open beer is for the picture, not pounding that early while on the trail. ;p

2. The first creek crossing, natures tunnel.

3. The first rocks of the trip, I love the contrast in colors between the sky and the ground.

1. Interesting rock formation on the way up to the Calcite Mine.

2. View from the top at the mine looking SSW. There is nothing left of the mine itself except a few calcite pieces laying around.

3. Took this on the way back down, I love this shot. :D

Great way to spend a day with your father!

You picked the right beer for the photo.. (one of my favorites). I was stuck in town doing all the normal Christmas junk

I love Newcastle, even converted my Pop on that trip and he normally does wine. ;) I was stuck in town too, we went a couple of weeks ago and I just didn't have the time to do the write up getting ready for Christmas.

Agree, wheeling is always better with those you care about. :D

my kids asked what an "alcoholic pass" is when we drove past that one (which I would not have noticed if it weren't for you)

I was looking for it and I still almost missed it. Did you pose with booze too? ;p
