I would say I'm VERY happy with it. I'm happy to pick up the tab for yours!

Just an update:

@Honger I appreciate the offer and the fact you offered reminds me how Mud has great folks. Thank you once again.

That being said, I decided to take matters in my own hands and start the process to get it from OZ directly. More details to come later.

A couple of the Australian OEM accessory Toyota ones will probably be posted in classifieds next week if anyone is interested. Assuming they make it here unscathed in my parts shipment. It is my first time buying parts directly from OZ myself.

These are not tinted dark and are for the older narrow nose 70 series btw.

I ordered this OEM bonnet protector for the 85+ from an Aussie Toyota dealer on eBay and begged them to ship it to the States. It was their last one and the box it showed up in, two months later, was paper thin. No padding, no nothing but it arrived unscathed.

That looks exactly like the few OEM ones I got as well some other aftermarket kinds. Was going to pick the one I think matches my side rain guards the best. Good to know it arrived unscathed for you. Gives me hope.

Question: Do you have to keep that black edging on the edge or is it removable?

@FJ73Texas I personally have shipped a few items from AUS to USA very affordably using "Parcl". I shipped it to a local address, they put it all in a new box and sent it on for me. Really wasn't a bad price especially with the exchange rate. That's how I got my floor mats rather than the group buy, came out a little cheaper actually.

Thank you for the tip Blomdala! I used ausff.com.au which seems to be the same process.

The problem with the bonnet protectors is the odd size. Shipping them is expensive no matter what. :(

Yeah that is a good point... I forget there are some maximum lengths that hider good pricing. I was thinking that I did get the A-pillar gauge pod trim shipped with AU post, but that's probably half the length of your protector, dang it!

Not true. Shipping this with Auspost was $90 AUS which is about $58 USD.

I'm having door cards, cargo cards, and rear ambulance doors shipped for $150 AUS with Auspost.

How long ago did you get yours?

Keep in mind I used a proxy service and they said Auspost was not an option for me, perhaps because of the virus??

It took some digging to see why ausff.com.au called my package "oversize".

Auspost parcels must :

  • be no heavier than 22kg for Domestic and 20kg for International
  • have a maximum linear dimension no larger than 105cm
  • have a maximum diameter no larger than 140cm
  • have a cubic volume (measured as length x width x height) no greater than 0.25 cubic metres

Source: Australian Post Parcel Limitations | Mail Forwarding Australia | Australia Postal Address | AUSFF

One of the boxes that had the bonnet protectors did exceed 105cm (or 41.3 inches) before I combined all of my packages. At that point they said I could only use DHL or FEDEX to get it to my door.

That could be. It took two weeks and I just got it this week.

The picture you shared of yours makes me like the OEM one even more. Thank you for the pic.

I was told that they are rust magnets what has me skeptical of using one but then again I don't really expect that to be an issue where I live.

I've seen dozens of these in use while in Oz and Tassie and never seen rust under the bonnet. Fender wells, yep, but not bonnet. FWIW, you're supposed to sand down and hit the holes you drill with Por15 / Corroseal and a dab of touch up paint .

I got five of these in yesterday and two are already spoken for (one for me and other for a mud member). See (Diesel & JDM) classifieds for the other three. Don't want to break any rules here.

Coincidentally, while this whole thread revival was going on, I also was looking to ship a bonnet protector from AUS. I took a trip on my troopy as soon as I got it pretty much up the Pacific coast, and I got smashed with bugs and chipped paint on the front end of my hood in a few spots over the course of just one trip. Ended up on holding off on getting one due to COVID19 really slowing shipping down, but Toyota of Sydney just got back to me saying that they can now ship freight. So, depending on how many they allow me to get, I'll hopefully be getting a bunch of bonnet protectors in the near future and distributing them as @FJ73Texas did.

Note that I painted some of the chips already just as a temporary remedy, and also note that I did not have a bull bar when I did the trip. Please ignore how dirty the vehicle is.

I am glad you are going to get some and distribute them. The OEM ones are really nice. I never intended to do a group buy or sell a bunch of them myself. Just get a few of them is all.

The few I had gotten sold out really fast over in classifieds. One was going to be for me but I decided to go with the dark tinted aftermarket one I got in the same shipment so it would match my also tinted side rain visors. Seems OCD I know but overall, I did like the OEM ones more as far as quality and fitment goes. Just my opinion.

One thing you should consider is getting a few of the OEM widenose ones if you are going to do a "group buy". I am sure some of those folks with the 79 builds going on would like them.

@FJ73Texas Word. I asked Toyota of Sydney for 5 narrow noses, and 2 wide noses. If anybody on here thinks I should get more or less, or would like to just secure one ahead of time, feel free to message me and I'll adjust the count accordingly. Otherwise, that's what I just emailed them for.
