The gray colored trim/cladding on my 2000 is starting to peel. I was thinking about having it painted black to match my truck anyway. Is there a special tool to take it off?

There's been some posts I just read on this. They (the flares) are pretty rare in the West, more common in the East. Dealer/region add-ons.

Search the 100 forum for "fender flares", at least that's what I think I saw them under while browsing through older posts this weekend.

i dont think hes talking about the fender flares, but the door trim panels. I have a LX so mine are different but, i think they are a couple body clips and some 3M adhesive.

I am talking about the gray colored trim that runs from front to back and is about 4 1/2" tall. It really seems fastened well?

I have a panel on the DS rear quarter panel that is peeling too. It is probably double-sided tape holding it on. That stuff is very strong and is used a lot for lightweight trim pieces like what is on the 100. I gently pried on a corner of the one peeling and it looked like double sided tape to me, but I didn't take it all the way off yet.

I had this problem on my 99 LC, to do it right all molding has to be removed. It is on with clips and most shops will use tape to reinstall. I got quotes ranging from $150 to $750. The $750 was from a Toyota dealer and the $150 was from a small shop. Your kind of stuck because when these moldings start to peel they make you LC look like crap. The reason I would recommend a body shop is if they screw it up they have to fix it.

They are taped and clipped. I just removed them from a truck. Lots of little holes to fill if you want to get rid of it. About $700 for a complete new set that comes with clips and double sided tape.

I say paint them body color on the truck. Good shop should be able to tape them properly and paint/.

Would said truck have a solid front axle perhaps? :D

I'm probably going this route at some point. I think my 100 would look good all green; body cladding, bumpers, sliders, all of it. Once I get the holes in the front bumper welded up, I'm going to need to paint it. Plus, I've got lots of scratches on the sliders and rear bumper that could use some paint too. I just gotta make some time to get it done.

Lets shop for a 2-for-1 special in or near Parker - I have been wanting to do this too.
I was going to attempt to paint just the center strip Black and leave the outter parts Gray. Then if if I mess up or it looks real bad - pay the shop to do the whole trim.

putco (google Putco) makes a side moulding trim kit in a chrome tape kit for about $150.00. I haven't seen one on a vehicle ,but would be interested to find out how they look.

you said chrome on IH8MUD, should i call the fire department now or wait till its a 5 alarm blaze?

i apologize for the profanity.

mmm...... OK. Just in time. That gets you upgraded back from the black list to the gray list! be sure to buy some armor soon and show pics if you want to be back on the green list!

:D

I was looking in the service manual (through techinfo.toyota.com) since I have the same problem on my 'new' 2002 LC, and it had a few tips for removing the outside body moulding. They say to heat the moulding to between 104 & 140 F. Then cut the adhesive tape with a knife. Then use a taped over screwdriver to remove the moulding.

Not sure if that's really necessary or not, but that's what the manual recommends.

I agree with Slee, a reputable shop can tape it off and paint it properly. I am going to get estimates as soon as I get home again - if anyone is thinking about it post up those estimates.

Estimates are good...we can get an idea what is reasonable. I am willing to go in on a for a 2 for 1 locally if you find anyone willing to talk.

I had to buy new ones to get them painted--body shop said the old ones were too crappy for paint to stick and they needed to be off the truck to be painted properly. They've been done now for over two years and still look perfect. Total cost for new mouldings and paint was just under $1k. Too much.
