Well i have a blown HG and dont feel comfortable fixing it myself without having done it before. Can you guys recommend a place where i can take it to be done AND see what they are doing so next time (hopefully there wont be a next time) i could do it myself?

oh and while i'm making demands it should not be expensive :)

Well not to make more work for Jim C. but I have seen an 80 or two in his shop from time to time.

He let me watch him do some stuff, but I had to let him shoot the pellet gun at a later date. and I was sworn to secrecy about the Skunk works.

Marty might know of a place close to Cincy.

I dont think Nick works on anything Cruiser that begins with "8"

AFAIK...Jim C would be your best bet, I know he has done at least one before. I saw it apart in his garage. fj40jim@aol.com or maybe send him a pm. I won't speak for Nick, but he probably doesn't have time. Jim is located in Lancaster, OH so a tow would suck up there. AAA will tow for a 100 miles I belive with one of their fancy packages. Jim is probably super busy though.

I won't go that far...I have worked on a couple 80 series rigs in the past. But in this case Marty is right: I don't really have the time for a job that involved on a daily driver. My brother has the garage tied up with his BMW project right now anyway.

I highly recommend JimC. I would not plan on watching though. This is a multi-day project with a couple steps that happen at the machine shop. Most mechanics will not let you stand around and watch anyway. Liability is a big reason for this. And you might not want to see some of the stuff that happens as part of the process. :o After the work is done you should not have to do it again (on this vehicle).

HTH,
Nick

Yes, the new improved head gasket that Toyota released means you will not have to do this repair again. And you get to change the PHH at the same time. No worries after that.

That Jim C guy is real busy on some big projects, so would not be able to take on an FZJ80 HG job right now. Not on a DD that you need back in a week.

I'm sure they'd be expensive, but the dealer might be able to handle this. It's a new enough vehicle that they might remember it, and it's a common problem, so they've probably done a few.

So whats the deal with your motor?

i talked to a guy on the forum, i guess my HG is not blown after all. i think i was confusing rough idle with missing at idle. apparently if it was missing at idle i would know and right now its just idling a litttttle rough.
