So I got a replacement windshield but when the glass shop went to install it they told me the original rubber was glued in place to the frame and they were worried about ripping it when taking out the old glass.

Do they glue the rubber to the frame from factory? Does the rubber even have to come out with the old glass? I thought that was the point of the chrome strip to lock the glass in place and allow the glass to be removed without removing the rubber from the frame?

I ordered a new rubber just in case and it does not have the groove for the chrome strip. They said the new style does not use it. Does anybody have experience with this particular rubber? Does it seal as good? Should it be glued to the frame? Or should I continue looking for the original style?

These are just fine, and we usually keep them in stock. The chrome might look good, but it's kind of a pain in the butt.

Get a Genuine Toyota window rubber.

Mr. Galt makes a good point, the glass that shops usually try to get is not for the 73 & 74 series, it's for the hardtop versions.

We have been able to get this glass from Toyota, but it does present its challenges.

Window rubbers we get from overseas typically.

So the new windshield and new chromeless rubber were installed today. For the record the chrome strip in the original style rubber is as Radd Cruisers said strictly cosmetic. I was thinking it was like the old Chevy trucks that used it to lock it in place and did not require the rubber to be removed from the frame when replacing the glass but I was wrong. The Rubber on the LandCruiser goes onto the windshield and then the rope technique is used to install it in the frame. No Urethane required

These are available on ToyoDIY if you look them up...

I did get my windshield from Toyota but they no longer use the old part number listed on ToyoDIY.
The BJ74 Windshield part #56111-90k08 has been replaced with new part #56111-60230

And just for anyone else that stumbles across this thread during their search for a windshield the hard top BJ70 new part # 56111-60220

Where did you get a BJ74 windshield? What is the part number for that source?
...and what's the part number for the Toyota window gasket?

Sorry I dont have the part number for the rubber. I purchased it from 4wheelauto, as the manager from the glass shop happened to be in Edmonton and picked it up for me. I have not even seen the receipt

One nice thing about getting the windshield from my local Toyota dealer is they do not charge any shipping to bring it in :) Surprisingly it was brought in from Los Angeles :hhmm:

I have had three windshield in my BJ74 in the last 6 years. They have used the original rubber each time. The first two windshields were not as good as the one I have now (both Chinese from the DOT 459 code). My present windshield is more rock resistant than the last two.
My present windshield was sourced By Broco Auto Glass from Toyota and is an OEM replacement made by FLACHGLAS AUTOMOTIVE GmbH, located in Witten, Germany.
Part # 5611-60230.

To comply with DOT standards all windshields must indicated its DOT code identifying the company and country of manufacturer. Avoid Chinese windshield if possible.
