So I've got the dash out of my BJ74 so that I can dynamat the firewall and as I tend to do whenever I'm looking at the factory wiring loom, I got to wondering what some of the unused connectors are for. Some I know, some I can take a reasonable guess at but others are a total mystery. I'm hoping the brains trust might be able to help me out.

First contestants are these three similar looking capped off plugs around the general vicinity of the instrument cluster. One appears to have nothing but white wires with black traces, the other two have a variety of colour codes. Anyone got any idea? I did have a squint at the parts manual but it doesn't give any detail around this area. The only wiring diagram I've got is more of a general guide than a detailed schematic.

Toyota used the one wiring loom for many models and markets. The variations are mind boggling Probably the best way is to look at what other options were available new and see which ones you don't have. That would narrow it down some what.

Yep, I get why the spare plugs are there. But take that arrangement with the all the white with a black trace wires running to a single plug...

By my understanding in toyota colour coding, that should be all earth wires. I'm wondering whether those three plugs are effectively 'test ports' and that will be a bunch of items which are switched to earth or something like that. To facilitate testing during assembly.

Does the peach coloured cap on those grounds have any pins in it? or is it just a dustcap?

Popped the cap off. They're bus-barred together in a group of four and a group of 8. So I guess those connectors were toyota's method for distributing one particular connection to a bunch of circuits.

White with black tracer is usually ground. I'd bet they're grounds for the instrument cluster.
