Hey guys, I'm looking to upgrade my shocks/ leafs in my bj74 1987 middy and was wondering if anyone could tell me what the max travel is so I know what size shocks to get, I had a look on E-shocks but they don't sell ones for my model? Also my rear end droops a bit when loaded up and wanted some advice on airbag vs two stage/stiffer rear springs?

Up to a 2 inch lift standard length shocks will work. Im with Hulsty,go for a stiffer spring rather than airbags.
I had Dobinsons heavy duty on the rear of my 73 and it didnt sag. It rode a bit rough when empty, but I learnt to play around with air pressure in the rear tyres.
I dont know what the 2 stage leaf springs would be like in this application,it works ok on my 75 series ute,but it carries a 500kg camper around most of the time. Its pretty bouncy with no load on though.
I dont think you will need it on a middy, unless you are towing something heavy.

For shocks best option is to measure it yourself. IMO I dont like air bags in this type of application where you will have decent flex etc, go for new springs.

I would but I fly in/out of Port Hedland my 4x4 is in Brisbane opposite side of Australia so I guess that will have to wait....unless I can con my brother into doing it for me.

I can't measure it at the moment as I fly in/out (FIFO) for work might have to wait till RNR (rest and relaxation) unless I can get my brother to check for me......hint hint if your reading this. :-) My rig doesn't have any suspension lift just a set of 33" on it I like a low centre of gravity for side slopes, when I go camping I have a fair bit of weight in the back-two 70ltr eski's and the trailer, thanks for the advice! :-)

IMO lift doesnt really compare to shock length, I have had minimal left and massive flex needing 12'' shocks.

I'll keep that in mind, if anyone know the min and max open shut lengths of a bj74 shock is that should be enough?

sag

This is my BJ74 with the eski's in the back droops :steer:even more with the trailer onhttps://forum.ih8mud.com/images/smilies/steer.gif

You can walk into any suspension shop in Australia and buy them off the shelf to fit.
But shocks are not going to cure your suspension sag,you need new springs
