My speedo cable decided to stop working a couple of weeks ago. The cable snapped off on the end where it goes into the speedo gear on the tranfer case.

I'm looking for the best way to fix it. I have a new cable ready to put in but should I replace the inner cable part or the whole inner and outer speedo cable? The speedo cable is pretty beat up where it bolts on to the speedo gear and it would be good replace that part.

Has anyone got ideas on the best way to replace it? It seems like it would be a pita to replace the whole thing as it routed from te factory.

It's a hassle ot replace it, but you should just put in a totally new cable and cable housing. They are generally pretty reasonable at a parts supplier.

Thanks John,

I have a new cable to install. I tried just replacing the inner cable but the stock and aftermerket cables are a slightly different length.

Just one more question tho. Do I need to grease the inner cable and if I do what with? Moly?
Also the seal on the transmission hump under the heater duct, is tbat hard to get over the end of the new speedo cable? Guess I'll find out soon enough.

Thanks for your help mate, cheers.

Bought mine straight from Toyota without lubing it.
Not a problem the heater hump, will help if you have small hands or SWAMBO willing to assist.

Hey Boogie,

When I first got my BJ70 the speedo cable was making a screaching noise so I took the inner cable out completely from the dashboard end. Lubricating the inner cable with white lithium grease made it problem free.

If you want to install the inner cable only and lube it up it should be good to go!

Thanks for the replies.

I bought a aftermarket cable and installed it. It was a good cable and all the mounting points fit like the factory one. It is a bit shakey so I might lube the inner cable and see if that helps. No noise from the cablethough.

Cheers.
