The only issue with our new to us 74 is the right side window seamed to have issues. The window Auto goes up, but almost to the top starts hopping and popping like there is a stripped gear.

Took it apart. Yup stripped gear. (Near top of rack gear in photo)

Its odd, the gear on the rack went. But it is just stamped steel.

Being in the US, no used parts yard I can go pull 70 series parts from. Also the dealers all have no idea what a BJ74 is. If push comes to shove I will put it in CAD and custom laser cut a new gear rack, then weld it on. However I don't think I will have to do that.

The FJ62 power window regulator does not look the same, however the 88 4Runner power regulator sure looks like a match. We all know how Toyota likes to make one thing then use it across the board as much as possible. I am hopping this is the deal here.

Local Toyota dealer is saying no joy on OE parts in new old stock for an 88 4Runner.:crybaby:

I have an aftermarket one inbound now and will see if its a fit. If anything if the rack is a match, I can cut and weld that one in place of the damaged one.

Just waiting on parts now. Will share if it works.

Did you try eBay.au

Not yet. Trying the 4runner part first. I will look around the globe a bit if this does not work. Otherwise I will just draw the part in Solidworks and have our laser cutter make me a few. Its just spot welded to the main moment arm so easy to change over with a fabricated gear rack.

Just hope the 4runner part is the ticket! Sure looks the same.

Mark, you may already know but save this link, it's a 70 series owner's friend:

You can find the p/n and run it to see which other vehicles are used in.

Also these:

Steve @ EBI Cruisers
John @ Radd Cruisers

No joy on the match up of the 88 4Runner power window regulator. The mount and main arm is a match, but the cross arms and main channel are shorter. The rack is the same gear pitch as the pivot points are the same; however the 4Runner rack has less teeth.

Left: Stock BJ74 window regulator Right: aftermarket 1988 4Runner window reg. Close but still off.

All is not lost. Since the rack is the same gear pitch the new part donated a new end. I cut out a jig saw puzzle part of the new rack, and then cut the old rack to fit the puzzle part. (About 2.5” of gear rack, the whole end) Using the rest of the new rack I used it as a guide to make sure the teeth matched up. I then TIG welded the new rack end to the old rack. Blended the weld and re-shaped the flat in the joined tooth area with a cut off disk. I also added a fish plate to the open side of the part to bolster the welded area. However since the butt weld was done not in a straight line, but a puzzle shape it’s mechanically locked in as well. Sorry should have taken some photos of this process but was in get it done mode. Here is the area where the weld is:

Shot the welded area with some flat black, greased up the whole thing and put it back in the truck. The window works perfectly now. Would have been nice if it was a drop in fit, but the total cost $21.50 including shipping for the part of donor rack was fine.

Painted and greased ready for install:

I would have welded on and filed out some new teeth- no cost :hillbilly:

I actually thought about doing this. But know the welded area would not match up metallurgically and figured it was strong enough to strip away the gear in the first place, it would do it again. The patched in new gear rack is as strong as new so should be fine with this one.

The welded metal would be harder than the native metal - anyhow she is fixed.
Did you find out why it striped - unless that is known - it might happen again.
