1. Every time I remove my fuel cap, my BJ's fuel tank sucks in a half gallon of air making an impressive whooshing sound. Is this tank supposed to be vented?

Beginning to wonder if that evil looking "Evaporative Separator" squid looking dealio on the filler pipe is part of the issue. I do NOT see anything that looks like or is identified as a "vent"...

Any thoughts or input would be appreciated...

P.S. I was amazed that Toyota put a trap door on the floor of my BJ rear area for access and replacement of the fuel tank sending unit. Thank you Toyota engineers... (photos attached).

2. My fuel gauge will never read FULL. It only goes to a bit past 3/4 and stops when I fill it, even with diesel filled right to the top of the filler neck. I went and purchased a brand new toyota sending unit and installed it. You guessed it, same damned thing. 3/4 full. So it's not the sender...

UPDATE: Pulled the new sender out of the tank and manually moved it to the 100% full position. The fuel gauge did not move to full, so it appears to be a gauge issue...

Hi, There is a small breather which is most likely blocked as mine was, is a short rubber hoses that pushes into a hole in the body to the right/front of vehicle when looking at the filler, comes off the neck, inside of the chassis rail.

Right front of tank or vehicle... Can you tell me which hose by looking at that diagram I posted? Was your hose blocked or pinched...

77022A, When looking at the fuel door to the right-front of vehicle it pokes up. On mine the whole assembly was full of mud, I pulled out the filler neck and all attached hoses and cleaned them out
Excellent information. I'll go look at mine now... Thank you!

Thank you for the complete description of where it "pokes up".
It looks like the vent is actually inside the reinforcing rib since the hose is clamped to a fitting, not inserted through a hole into the rib.
Now that you've found it, can you tell me where it is? Cause I'm still in the dark over here...

Now that I know what to look for it makes sense.
Looking into the rear wheel well, just below and forward of the fuel door one can see the fuel evaporative separator behind the rock shield [77286]. The hose from the top of the fuel evaporative separator connects across to the vent fitting in the reinforcing rib under the the rear deck floor.

Gotcha. Thanks. It's not even clear in that drawing where that hose from the top connection of the separator goes... I'm wondering how this configuration keeps water out of the tank in deep water crossings...

By the way Mr Galt, I'm afraid there's no saving us this time. I'm afraid we're already beyond the rubicon.

That's the only reason I bought a pre-brain box diesel land cruiser.
