Gday all,
One of the problems with mt new '86 BJ74 13b-t is the clutch...
It works OK, but doesnt activate until about 70% of the way to the floor, it has Massive freeplay before anything happens and then it all happens in about 2cm.

Because of this (i think), it crunches into reverse sometimes, and it's weird to drive.

Any suggestions? where do i adjust? or do i need a new something?

Thanks

Crunching into reverse is not unusual with these gearboxes, somtimes selecting another gear and then trying reverse again will help. But the clutch will make it worse if it worn out
Is it leaking clutch fuid anywhere?
Does it help if you pump the clutch?
You can adjust the pedal height but this is very limited.

You are probably up for a clutch kit, a good one is about $500 ,cheapies about $300,and about 6-7 hrs labour.
At this point it is wise to have the flywheel machined ,about $70 and I also changed the rear main seal which was another $80

Thanks for the info
Damn, i thought it might just be a cheap fix, ofcourse not.... Did you do the clutch, seals ect yourself? I have a bit of mechanical knowledge, should i attempt it myself?

No I got someone to do it out of laziness on my part last time, but Ive done them in my shed with the engine on the floor.

Its easy in theory, but its a heavy gearbox and the t/case makes the weight lop sided,so it always wants to rotate..
Some use motorcyle lifters or big jacks with a platform on top to lift the gearbox and t/case up and down.
It would be real easy with a mechanics hoist and a gearbox jack

OK, thanks, so it would be better having it done in a workshop then...
Ill have to start organising prices

If you have time, patience, good tools and more time it can be done at home but some times just as easy to make it some one elses prob like Rosco said with a a hoist and gearbox jack

Your booster could be tucked up between the firewall and clutch pedal inside the cruiser.(74) You will
see it to the left of the steering column.
Think the 73 booster is in the engine bay on a bracket????? I might be wrong cause never seen one in person.

Cheers.

Does yours have a vac assisted clutch or a full manual clutch?

My 85 FJ73 has vac assisted but 86 BJ74 not? both LX models thought it was abit odd. Probably a space thing with the turbo there and all

Mine's the 86 also, it has the booster in the cabin just next to the steering column.

also, i forgot to say, it seems to "grab" when changing down gears...
i select a lower gear and take my foot off, but the clutch pedal takes a second to follow my foot, it activates suddenly and sometimes results in screeching tyres....

Is it using any clutch fluid or does it help by pumping the clutch pedal?

It doesn't use any fluid, and i'm not sure if it helps to pump the pedal, when i put the wheels back on i'll test it and let you know

The reason I asked is that a worn out master cyl will get pressure with a few pumps. You probably would have noticed it by now ,but its worth a try. They are cheaper and easier than a clutch kit;)

The part number for a BJ74 clutch master is 31401-60042.
Does anyone know where to get this part? I have been told it has been discontinued.
I put a rebuild kit through my clutch master but would love to get a new M/C.

Which side is your turbo on? I forget whether it is the LHD or RHD model ,but one of them needs its own MC to clear the turbo.
If the turbo is on the LH ,then a RHD model maybe able to use one off another 7* series??
I could be wrong though.

Hey rosco, Its a RHD BJ74 and the turbo is on the drivers side. I had RooDogs try and track me one down with no luck. I think I called and emailed just about every toyota parts shop in Vic and some in qld to find the part. The M/C is unusual because its a three bolt type, most other 70 series clutch masters have a two bolt mount to the firewall. The clutch line comes out the top of the M/C before the reservior and there is a heat sheild for protection from the turbo.

Here it is:

It pretty tight in there and hard to get good pics but hopefully you can see what I'm on about!!!

Any other 74's have same set up?
Cheers,

Gav.

Yes,I see what you mean. I think only Dave at Japan4x4 can help you there.
The other option is to have a stainless steel bore put in. They never wear out;)

Yep I think a stainless sleeve is the way to go. The bore was slightly scuffed
when i put the rebuild kit in but needed to get back on the road so didn't get it
machined. I'm sure I'll have to do it at some stage. The rebuild kits are the
same as the other 70 series clutch masters though which is good.
