BJ74 axle upgrade possible?

First of all a warm welcome since this is my first post :cheers:

Long story short I wanna put Toyota axles under my Zukie and since I live in Europe I do not have many possibilities to choose from and prices are kinda high. The goal is to build a light truck for trial competition, coiled on custom suspension. I would like to ride 35" for the first year or so and then go bigger to maybe 37-39".

Recently I came across the axles which you can see below, I believe those are from late eighties BJ74. The price is right but one thing bothers me. First of all the strength - looks like many people here and on pirate4x4 put axles from 40, 60 and 80 - why is that so? Are those stronger than 70? I've seen many Toyotas here on 35" so why not?

Another question, even more important is the choice of aftermarket heavy duty parts like birfields, shafts and gears. When I visit pages like:

I can see many products for 40 and 80 series but nothing dedicated to BJ74 or even 70 series. So the question really is exactly which of performance parts will fit to those particular axles if any?

late 40,60,early 70 are pretty much all the same, just different widths. Centers are all the same. Standard centers and rear axles will be fine with 35-36'' rubber. IMO get longfields for the front (40 series longfields are the same as Low pinion 70 series).

I assume your talking about a Suzuki? Standard rear axles will probably be fine under that too since it will be light, you can get upgraded rear axles if you want.

Welcome smasher, what drive train (engine, transmission, etc.) does your Suzuki have?

Like Hulsty mentioned older 70 Series Land Cruiser axles like those in a BJ74 are very similar to those found in the 40 and 60 Series.

I believe that these BJ74 axle assemblies will be about 25mm (one inch) wider than regular 40/45 Series axles.

Let me know if I can help with sourcing parts from the USA - I live nearby Longfield.com and I have a co-worker who speaks Polish.

My samurai is a pretty standard tin top but already coiled on LR radius arms, a-arm and custom springs/shocks. It's stock 1.3 carb but with 6.5:1 Trail Gear transfer case and 5.125 diffs on 33" Simex rubber and it's already pretty capable. The plan is to prepare it for the next season during the winter - put those LJ74 axles underneath, 3-link front, 4-link rear and cut the body.

Looks like justdifferentials.com has Chromoly Birfield Kit With Shafts so we are good on the front:

Now how about the drum to disc conversion kits? Are there any aftermarket or do I have to source some parts from another Yota axles? Which is gonna be pretty **** difficult here :frown:

BJ75 axles are 8.x or 9.5?
 
Cruiser 40, 60, 70 or 80 axles would be plenty strong enough for your 1.3 zuk both of my cruisers are chevy V8's and my axles hold up fine, I've broken 2 rear full floating axles in 20 years and broken 3 front CV's until I upgraded to longfield 30 spline superset axles and Birf's about 7 years ago, both trucks are front and rear diff locked and I've never been able to break anything in the front end since I did the longfield upgrade and have had a few opp's moments with the front coming up off the ground and smashing back down under full power with difflock in and wheels at hard lock :doh:

front disc brakes are bolt on cruiser stuff and rear discs aren't hard to do if you get a drum brake rear end, down here (our rear axles are mostly full floating) we turn the hub flange down about 10mm so a front rotor will slide over the hub the same as a drum does and find a caliper to suit and make a bolt on bracket up to bolt it all together

70 series was not available in the U.S. That is why you haven't seen them so much in comparison to 40, 60 and 80. The housings are beefier tan 40 series for sure with much reinforcement. They are exactly the same width. 60 and 80 are longer. I just put a set of cable lockers from an 88 70 series on my 40.
