The rear seatbelts in our bj73 seemed a little short so I pealed back the carpet underneath the seat to see if I could put longer ones in. It turns out that the belts that are in it right now are just zip tied to the bottom of the seat.

Does anyone have any good ideas of a way to attach lap belts so the seats will still tumble forward. I don't like the idea of having the belts just attached to the seat though, it seems like it might fold forward in a accident. The other option is just trying to get a hold of the second roll bar and three point belts from the 74. That might be a challenge in the US.

Hopefully it is a high quality zip tie. :D

Haha!!

I'd attach them as per Toyota factory specs, no different. Wouldn't mess around when it comes to belts. Which would be the floor as the rears were always lap only, not lap-sash.

Or you could upgrade the two outer ones to lap-sash with a cage. Attach the female end to the floor as per Toyota and the male end to the cage. You wouldn't necessarily need the Toyota spec cage, a good custom one will be enough.

Yeah, maybe it was done to pass a visual inspection of some sort.

Seatbelts, check! :grinpimp:

If its a JDM truck, you are right in that they probaby don't have the mounting points on the inner part of the wheel well like the newer and N/A spec trucks do.

Still an a****** for selling it like that. Imagine if you put your kids in the back and you had a crash.

You're right about there being no mounting points. I'll just have to find sturdy enough places and drill holes. Some heavy duty bolts and washers should do the trick.

Try put a 5mm steel plate about 2" x 2" with the nut welded to it, behind the body work in question. This is what manufacturers do from new when installing belts that pull perpendicular to flat surfaces.

I've got to agree that is pretty lame unless there was some disclosure or something....

My 86 Jap BJ74 had lap belts on rear seat. Fitted rear roll-bar with forward roof bars connected to internal roll-bar of jeep. The seat belt spool and sholder anchor point are fixed to new roll bar. Female end of belt is attached to frame of rear seats as per factory. Passed by DOT in Ireland and Insurance company engineer. Got the idea from photo kindly posted by an Aussie here on mud.

Don't F**k around with seat belts and peoples and your safety.
