Hi everyone,

So I finally ordered an exchange steering box for my BJ73 - arrives tomorrow.
Just 3 quick questions....

1) how do you align the pitman arm so it's dead straight?

2) it will arrive dry - I assume I fill it with normal gear oil but where does one fill it up? Do you take the square 'lid' off the top that has the adjusting nut in it?

3) steering fluid - does one use ATF fluid?

Thanks!
Grant

It should be fully adjusted when you get it, the pitman arm I "think" only goes on in one position as it is keyed. The fluid is the power steering fluid, so dribble some into the box, then connect the lines and with the front off the ground and the car at idle make sure the reservoir is full and cycle lock to lock to bleed all the air out.

For the arm alignment, there should be some scribed lines on the end of the shaft and on the face of the arm. They could be slightly covered in mud / dirt / rust. Scotchbrite the areas smooth and they should pop up.

Thanks guys,

It's all in and works like a dream! At last I can drive without having to waggle the steering wheel side to side constantly.
Box cost $695 exchange and was easy to fit.

Cheers
Grant

Good to hear it all works like new again, I am 99% sure the pitman arm has a master spline, and only fits one way.

nah there a even spline all the way around so the pitman arm can be oriented at any position on the shaft so as above you use the match marks to line it up :)
