BJ40 or BJ70?

I am in the process of selling my Cummins 6BT powered FJ60 and am looking for a new project vehicle.

I am currently Living in Costa Rica and have access to BJ40 and BJ70 Series trucks.

I have no idea what engines can be found in either of these groups and could use a hand getting an idea of the pros and cons of both.
I was hoping to find a thread with a comparison of the two but was unable to find one.

Any things to watch out for each would be great to help me get an idea of what truck would be better to build up. Not afraid of swapping stuff around to make a great truck. The more tech the better.

Ones based on the other and with the newer you are more likely to have PS and aircon,5sp ,along with easier access to parts from the dealer.
They share most of the same engines although the 6cyl were only available in the 45 series and the 70 didnt get them until 90 when it got the 1HZ and 5 cyl 1PZ.
It boils down to personal preferences but if comfort and handling count ,then the 70 is one.
The 70 is also very closely related to the 60,in fact its virtually a swb 60 with a different body.

Hey thanks a lot for getting back to me, I knew it would come down to preference, but Just also wanted to know if I could Turbocharge all of the engines in the B series or Just the 3B? I know the 3B is the best suited.

End of the line I want to mad the suspension to stretch the wheelbase and put longer leaf packs in plus a turbo

You can turbo any diesel but some are more suitable than others.The 3B has a good record on being turboed compared to the B,2B and the 3B has more cc.
The direct injection B engines are the best 11B 12B 13B 14B 15B ,these are found in toyota trucks and the 14B and 15B are 3.6 and 4.0 litre respectively.

Yeah that agrees with what I have read so far, apparently I should also keep the boost to under 10 PSI if I want the B engine to survive, which makes sense.

I recently found a BJ40 with a completely cleaned up body for sale right down the road from me, its a '77 with a stock B engine.

I am thinking about going that route, much cheaper than the 70 series around me.

With a turbo it shouldn't be too bad if I keep the tire size to 33"

That's them,probably the best combination of roominess ,comfy ride and off road capability you will get in a leaf sprung vehicle in the world

I had a FJ40 when i first started college but had to sell it due to lack of space, its going to be for wheeling mostly and getting about town.
I know the 3B is better and so is the 5 speed, but I plan on putting a turbo on the B engine so that should help.
The body is in excellent shape, all metal no bondo, the frame was cleaned and has no issues either.
If I could find a MWB 70 series for a reasonable amount I would Jump on it, but they are just too expensive for my budget.
