just got my first car in the form of a 197 model BJ40...

its only a 4 speed, and im wanting to put a 5 speed gearbox in, ive heard that the BJ40 only ever came out with a 4 speed, i would imagine the landcruiser models of that period would all be similar, what model should i look at the get a 5 speed gearbox out of?

cheers, mat

The H55 5-speed came stock in the BJ42(mod. years 1983-1984) and the 1983 FJ40. The H55 continued on in a host of other vehicles. For your application, you need one from a diesel(BJ) as it will have the proper input shaft. You could buy one brand new from Toyota but you'll still need the diesel input shaft and a split transfer case. Be aware unless you can find one from a 83-84 BJ42(highly unlikely), the shifter will sit back approx. 4 inches from where it comes through the floor currently and your front and rear drives lines have to be lenghtened/shorte4ned. Well worth the trouble as everyone seems to be very pleased with this swap. Check over at the diesel forum as there have been a ton of people do this swap. Good luck
