My '89 BJ-74 w/ 73,000 km has a front end growl and vibration when starting to decelerate in 4 High at any speed. When the 4 high button isn't activated the vibration isn't present. Any suggestions on troubleshooting cause and cure?

MJ

Is this on a soft or hard surface?
The part time t/case should only be driven in 4high/low on a soft surface .

If its on a soft or slippery surface maybe it needs some grease, flange bolts tightened ,uni joint ect.

And welcome NEWBIE. Maybe you could tell us a bit more about your 74 series:D

I thought is a front diff related issue .. did you aready check rod ends, bearings drive shaft, u joints, and pinion joke . ?

Check and see if the front drive shaft has any play. Check if one end wiggles more than the other. Is there a lift on the truck? Sounds like a bad u-joint maybe.

What sort of lift does the truck have? If anything over 2.5" you will probably need to get a double cardan front drive shaft to stop the vibration.

Not enough info for a cure, I don't think. As far as troubleshooting goes, I'd put the rig in 2 high and unlock the hubs. Then I'd crawl under and give the ds a shake at both u-joints as well as the slipyoke and see if you get any play. If you feel movement then look carefully to deturmine if it is coming from the u-joint or the bearing in the t-case or third member.

If you find something and still don't know what to do about it report back for further advice.
