The truck had an annoying vibration with a loud growling noise when decelerating in 4WD when imported at 70,000km. The PO had installed a 2" lift and 16" wheels. All front drive components checked OK, diff was in spec. Front shaft U-joints were replaced, and the yoke splines were tight, yet the problem remained the same.

Nearly all of the 4x4 trucks I'd owned used a Double Cardan joint on the front shaft. A bit of searching on MUD found some discussions about a DC shaft for curing the same noise/vibration problem. This led to MUD member "driveshafterw" building a DC drive shaft for the '74 at his shop in Phoenix. All Spicer components, with excellent quality of workmanship throughout. Prompt and courteous service and fair prices, too.

The new DC shaft fit perfectly, and the noise and vibration problem was eliminated completely. The truck now runs smoother in 4WD than it ever did; accelerating or decelerating, even at highway speeds. The slight but noticeable vibration in 4WD which I assumed was 'normal' with the LC is now gone too. This is one of the best upgrades I've done to the truck and I recommend it for '70 series with single U-joint shaft ends.

searched to no avail….Do you have any contact info. for this guy/shop?

Glad to hear it worked out for you John. Couldn't agree more about this being a great upgrade. Did you end up keeping the Toyota U-joints or crossing over like I did? Thought I would add a pic of the DC I had built for anybody else reading this thread.

Do you know what size U-joints were used? Mine are 1310 sealed units (non greasable are not cross drilled making them stronger). They were concerned that the larger 1330 DC joint might have clearance issues on the cross member.
