Hi there all

First time posting on the site.

A short introduction - I work within the mining industry but reside in the Flinders Rangers "South Australia"

The family car is a V6 Prado but my toy is a BJ73 MWB.

BJ 73 : its was originally fitted with a 3b diesel - but due to the lack of water it meet it fate (wife was driving). Its now fitted with a 2h Diesel (4 litre) with overdrive - ARB winch bar - 9000lt winch - 33" BFG tyres.

Looking forwards to the friendship and advise from forum members.

This picture was take 3 years ago - will post a more recent picture later - very much a plane jane cruiser in the picture.

All the best

Wayne

Hi Wayne Im Sure a few others would be interested in the finer points of your 73 series 2H engine swap.
Your opinions on power and fuel economy improvement would also be interesting
We also have a permanent thread called readers rides whcih you are welcome to put your best pic

Cheers and welcome, we need a bit more input on the 70 section, for sure. Looking forward to hearing about the swap. regards gazza

I'm guessing that's a CB antenna.

Hi there

Thanks all for the welcome - its funny as I have been looking for somewhere on the web which is devoted to the 70"s and this is the fist forum I have seen - top effort.

As for my toy "bugga 06" the 2H conversion has only been in the vehilce for about a month and as for fuel economy its a little to early to comment. The over drive will also help fuel economy as it drops the RPM from 3000 rpm at 120km/h to 2200 at 120km/h - and if anyone has seen the fuel prices currently in Australia its getting worse.

The reason for putting in the 2H was purely a cheaper option, the 3b engines are quite popular in Australia and very costly second hand. I purchased a 60 series wagon (accident damage) and used its drive line within the middy. I also do alot of towing with the vehicle as the wife has horses and I collect vintage fire engines (better be carefull here as they are Land Rovers)

Its not an easy conversion - you have to use the 60's gearbox as the bell housing & input shafts will not suit the 2h engine - and cut i shut the engine mounts (mount further forward).

As for electrical - the starter motor, alternator & A/C compressor are on oposite sides including the exhaust.

With the conversion being relatively new one thing for sure its has alot of grunt and very impressive off road.

I will post some more recent pictures next week - as i am currenlty away at work.

PS it is a UHF radio antenna on the "roo bar" well brush bar for non Australians.

all the best

Wayne

Nice personalised licence plate there :)

Did you notice a big difference with the H?

Dave

Hi there

Dave

I dont believe I will get any additional speed, take into consideration its only early days but the amount of torque and power is noticable off road.

The only reason I put the H motor into the middy was a cost issue, I bought the wrecked 60 series very cheaply which had good running gear (body trashed)

I will give you an update in a few months after consuming an few tanks of fuel.

Hey Wayne, I was wondering what model those brush bars are? Are they factory ARB items or did they have to be significantly modified from the 75 series cab chassis bars? TJM and ARB are giving me the runaround on what will and won't fit and I want to basically say "Well order me this and shutup".

Brush bars

Entaran

Hi there - its was about 4 years ago I purchased the front bar work - but from memory they are an ARB item - and they are fairly easy to install yourself, just need to drill the holes for the side bars where they meet the bull bar.

Also to my knowledge these vehicles are the same configeration as the 75 series cruisers (tray tops & troopies) - just a bit shorter.

I hope this helps.

Find a 75 series ,get out your tape measure and compare it to yours. I think you will find the ARB boys are telling you s***e.
The 75 series will have a longer chassis from the rear of the door back but the front is identical.
Try another ARB store.

My solution was to skip ARB completely and goto TJM. The guys at TJM give me 10000000000% better service (treating me like a person!)... the guys at ARB take one look at me... i'm 21... look young, they ignore me. Expecting that I don't have the cash to burn like the older fellas. Unfortunate for them as I just spent 6000 at my TJM store today on suspension and bullbar/winch/snorkel/flares

Dont get too carried away at JJM ,they are a bit thick too. The dramas I had ordering my Dobinsons suspension because they had no listing for a 73 were unbelievable.
In the end they sold them to me but forgot the freight ,GST and their profit margin. Too bad for them:flipoff2::D

Anyway did they agree that a 73 is the same as a 75 where it counts?
What kind of winch, BBar and flares did you get?
Is the snorkel a airtec?
Also who made the roof rack you have?
End of questions;)

Yes they agreed where it counted. Took me going out the front and parking mine directly next to a 75 series ute (which was convieniently there) and dragging them out to look though.

10,000 lb Ox winch. If it was a LWB, i'd get a 15,000 but I won't need it for the MWB. BBar is a T-13 outback bar in steel with the hilift points. Flares are Deluxe O/E style fibreglass like comes on 79 series.
Snorkel will be either airtec or safari. The airtec doesn't cut a hole in your aircan, the safari does. Much of a muchness here.
Roof rack is a Rhino rack commercial :)

I think I know the bullbar,I can get a used one 1/2 price:D
