Hey guys, I'm doing a knuckle rebuild on my FJ60 in the next couple weeks. I'm planning on disassembling the birfields, cleaning, repacking. While I've never done this job before, I'm under the impression that there is a snap ring (and a c-clip as well?) that break when you separate the birf from the axle shaft. I asked SOR if their knuckle kit comes with replacement snap rings, etc, and they told me DON'T DISASSEMBLE THE BIRFIELD BECAUSE IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT THE BALLS GO BACK IN THE SAME PLACE, ETC. It makes sense because the moving surfaces that contact each other will wear in the same manner. Does anyone have any comments on this?? I figure that if I'm very careful to replace the balls exactly where they came from that I could get away with cleaning it w/o messing anything up. And where do I get a replacement snap ring??....it seems like a dime a dozen part but I don't think the average auto parts store will carry something like that. Thanks for all the input on this, I'm sure many of you have experience with the almighty knuckle job.

Just completed my first knuckle rebuild last week. Unless your birf has alot of play leave it be. Just force in new grease until all old is out.

There really should be no reason to dissasemble the birfield joint. Just spray lots of brake cleaner in there to get all of the gunk out, and pack it full of grease. Pulling it apart just sounds like a headache.

It is a headache.
Getting the first couple of balls back in is usually easy. The others are less so.
Modern shops do not rebuild Rzeppa joints. You get new or the old is reused as is.

thanks for the input, I think I'll just repack with the joint intact.

Put Longfields In There!

I did this job on an 80 series some time ago - there is a write up that I did somewhere in the technical links section.

I used a lot of brake cleaner to clean the grease out of the birfield. I'm not sure I'd do it that way again. It was hard to be sure all the grease was out and then I was left feeling that it was full of brake cleaner.

I will try forcing new grease in to force the old grease out - as has been suggested in this thread - when I do this job again next month...
