Just noticed my front left birf seal is leaking to the point where there is grease on the tire now. How much of a pain is this to do and what are the parts I need to do this? The other side will need to be done at some point too but its not an actual leak like the driver side. Anyone want to help me with this towards the end of the month? I'll buy lunch and we can use the lift/tools at the shop I work at.

I have done it on my old 4runner but not on these FJ80's. From what I have read, the process is nearly the same. I have the 52mm socket needed to remove the hub/bearings.

Let me know when your doin it, and I can try to find the time to give a hand. Pretty sure I have all the tools necessary too.

Also. I would recommend doing a complete axle reseal, not just the one side. Since your gonna be in there and dirty anyways :D

Do some searching for a reseal kit. Your gonna want inner and outer axle seals, the felt washers. Your bearings should be good if they remained well lubricated.

From what I have read the 3rd member doesn't have to come out to get the axle out so I'm just going to do the one side for now since it's become an actual problem. I know both should be done but the budget hardly allows for the one side right now. With my current schedule with my son I probably won't have a free weekend till the 1st or 8th to do it.

I understand how that is. You wont need to remove the 3rd to do either side.

i got the complete rebuild kit, all bearings and seals. i also got new trunion bearings. youll need a s***load of brake cleaner, towels, a bucket with gas works great to clean up the knuckles. i also got the new hardened E12 size steering knuckle studs from toyota. id do both sides at once and get the mess done one time lol. youll also need the axle grease, knuckle grease, and diff oil.

I did this on my 94 a couple years back.. I still have the dvd also that I bought from here. It's pretty detailed. Where are you located at?

I live in Rocklin but work in Rancho Cordova.

Tracked the problem down to leaking inner axle shaft seals, I should have the seals on Friday. If they show up Friday I will be replacing them after work if anyone wants to hang out and see how its done. I won't be taking the CV apart due to the risk of not being able to get it back together.

bmwjnky I just saw this, did you ever get your front leaking seal replaced and fixed? I've rebuilt my front axle completely and can assist you if needed.

I don't know everything, but just enough to really f*** things up:D

Seriously, if you need a hand yell at me. I'm not far from Rancho

Yeah I replaced the seal a couple weeks ago, looks to be dry now. I'm sure the passenger side will need to be done at some point but I'm putting it off till its needed.
