Hello Folks

I'm rebuilding the knuckles on my 40 and noticed some damage on the shorty birf.

Should I be concerned w/ running them? File them smooth? Replace?

Look into why they'd be scored like this?

The outside of the bell shouldn't be a problem but I'd like to know what caused the scoring. What does the inside look like?

From what i can tell the inside looks normal. No binding when rotating. No internal scoring.
Ill take a look at the axle housing end in the morning to see if there is any damage.
I think my outer wheel bearings were a bit loose. Prob last serviced late 90s to early 2000s.

Run them til they break !!!

Or give them to me to break lol!!!!!

Check your trunion(sp) bearings tho or could have had something floating around in there (chunk of metal)

I'm replacing all bearings so i'll just clean the cavity as best as possible.

I didn't find any metal bits mixed in with the goo, but the goo was more like solid wax and a layer of soupy gear oil.

Unless you're installing longfields and keeping these as backup, I'd run them as suggested. Working out in the cold, are ya?

Wonder if it was coming out to far and Rubbing the axle housing.
Put them in and run them.

More pictures

The passenger side axle housing end has some slight damage on the inside.

I got around to cleaning the outer wheel bearing plate, or whatever they're called.
There are some decently deep grooves worn into them. Prob about double the depth needed to snag your fingernail.
use em or replace em? I'm not sure if the thickness of the plate is important, and i'm thinking not so much as i can adjust the bearing preload with the hub nuts.

:hmm:
is the stock LC birf w/ the long nose & warn hubs?

I believe it to be a stock birf, I took a pic of a code on one of the pics. To my knowledge this is the original birf.
Dunno if it is the long nose, but my cruiser is a 1978 with disk brakes.
Warn Hubs Yes.

Grease it and run it. You have some slop in the axle and when you are wheeling and it has a load on it, it rubs. i dont think it is stock. I do not recall any Toyota birfs saying birfield on them but I could be wrong on this part.

Sam, I'd file the dings and bumps in the trunion race holder to better hold the races, but other than that, RUN it. On the notched washers, I'd buy new and keep those for trail spares. Don't forget the 3% moly for the trunion bearings.
