I have 14" 5125's on my truck all around and they piss oil given the chance... I first noticed this last winter shortly after I installed the shocks. I had my truck in and out of a heated shop in the winter...-15 deg Celsius to 15+. Anyways, I brought the truck in and 2 hours later there were 4 puddles of oil under the truck. 1 set of shocks are 10+ years old, the other set was only a month or so old. The older shocks had less leakage.
Chocked it up to extreme pressure charge in the shock and the rate of expansions between the metals going from - to + temp pushed fluid out. No perceptible difference in the handling characteristics of the truck.
About 2 weeks later I brought the truck into the shop and same thing, oil leakage. Truck didn't see the shop after that. Also stopped leaking oil. Zero oil leak from then on and throughout the summer.
This winter, -20 rolls around and the truck rides fairly harsh compared to what I was accustomed to compared to the summer months. Chock it up to extreme cold temperatures. then I noticed hydraulic fluid sprayed all over the frame rails.... 14" 5125's have no boots... Anyhow...it's back in the + temps now a couple weeks later and there's shock oil all over my axle housings again and the shock shafts are soaked in oil.
As far as I can percept, the ride quality hasn't changed...
So what's deal? 5125's are trash? Standard practice for a highly pressurized mono-tube to spew oil?
