I'm heading out to Big Bend later this week. It's only for a day or two, and I've never been there, so any recommendations on any points of interest that I shouldn't miss would be appreciated. I'll be going solo, so keep that in mind if it's off the beaten path.

Thanks - Scott

Which way are you going 90 or I 10? 90 is a more scenic route but make sure you fill up in Del Rio just in case. There are lots of things to see in BBNP such as Santa Elena Canyon, on the way you will pass a couple points of interest such as the farm that is in the bottom of the chisos mountains, the old city (forget it's name), Make sure you go into the basin, cat tail falls and Terlingua!!! You can always make the loop by coming in 90 and head home by I 10 and that way you see Marathon, Study Butte, Alpine and Fort Stockton. The speed limit on I 10 is 80 mph IIRC but it's still a pretty good trek.
GL and have fun

Thanks! I'm heading out via 90. I've never been down that way, and might even take some of the back roads on the way out to Del Rio. I have done I-10 numerous times, so I'll only return that way if I'm anxious to get back. This is sort of a recon trip as my wife and I are planning on spending Christmas down there.

If only you could wait one month until the beginning of December. I'll be going with two very good guides. See it all. See the hidden secrets of the region.

Yeah, there are lots of interesting spots in BBNP that aren't well known to the public like indian burial grounds, hot springs etc. Some take a good solid day to reach and only with excellent climbing skills and equipment can they be reached but the rangers keep very close tabs on these. You'd be surprised at the amount of game cameras hidden in that park....

Yes, very true. However, I've found that Terlingua Ranch has nearly as many interesting places as the national park. Again, not listed.

It's always an adventure. I was speaking to a few Toyota people about a trip out west and we're thinking late February or March. Just FYI.

Thanks Brett - If you're serious, I may PM you about some of the details of that. I've been doing a little research, it seems there is a lot more to Big Bend than I first imagined. My initial plan was to just go down and do River Road and Old Ore Road from west to east just to get a feel for the place.

The only thing we're bummed about is the dog policy for the Big Bend/NPS. We'd like to do a few of the hikes but I guess dogs aren't allowed on any of the trails. Even in BBRSP they're only allowed 1/4 mile from the road.

OHHHH REALLY????? Terlingua hunt season starts the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I will probably be down there for it.

I wonder if that's a new rule with dogs. Until a few years ago, my friend always brought his dog. Of course you're not supposed to have a campfire either but we always took up a collection to pay for the ticket. A few of the rangers and I were on a first name basis.

BB is a top local in texas i have not seen. Miles of deserted land with plenty of solitude....we could have a spirit walk. Not to mention big bend sounds like a great cigar smoking venue... I bet the stars are amazing and would provide chingos of entertainment.

It's all those things.

I think we need to plan a spring club trip. We'll get it on the calendar in the next month to give people plenty of time to prepare.

As long as gas is cheap like right now consider us in! Although a trip real soon would be better because it aint going to last long. I am going as many places as time allows during the good weather and loosened noose of opec.

Agreed. I think we have until late spring before we see prices rising again. At least that's how it works historically.

I'm thinking February or March for Big Bend.

For those riding Honda trail bikes the price of gas is merely an after thought.

Damn, that would be a loooooooong ride on a Honda Trail Bike but I guess if the Aussie's can do it.....

You guys should stop by and see the bikes. I'm rewiring Kelly's and rebuilding the forks and brakes on mine.
