I'm thinking about possibly going to spend a few days (3 or 4) in the Big Bear area, doing some exploring and taking in several of the trails. Is there a (public if possible) campground that would be best for this? Good access to good wheeling (and hiking) trails, privacy, not crammed full of moronic teen Quadders, some pretty green trees and shade, not too far from supplies, maybe running water? Recommendation? Which one if any?
TIA

Hanna Flats right outside Fawnskin is very convenient to lots of trails.
Crab Flats is a little smaller and more off the beaten path, but still has great access to trails. Both can be reserved thru ReserveAmerica.

I cant recommend any since i dont go up there very often to camp. I will recommend you checking availability though. There are many kids still out school and summer is still on for many people. It was nearly impossible to get a campsite up there near the lake a while back when we were going to head up.

Another few thoughts.

There are several SBNF campgrounds in and around Barton Flats. That's not all the way up the mountain and farther from the wheeling trails, but beautiful nevertheless.

Query campgrounds in the San Bernardino National Forest Eric and then ask questions.

I've stayed at Crab Flats and Barton Flats and driven past Hanna Flats a few times.

We just stayed in Crab Flats..it is a nice campground, a little rundown. It is very close to Dishpan Springs and the west end of Holcomb Creek. If you want to do John Bull or Gold Mtn it is about 18 miles of dirt on 3n16.
