I have just completed my latest trailer project. I tend to like the late 40's style trailers. This one is a 1948 Ben Hur utility trailer model 22-47. These were made in Milwaukee and are very similar to the same vintage David Bradley trailer and others sold by Sears.
I picked this up at an auction and it was supposedly used for decades by a boy scout troop.
It seemed to be in decent condition, but I uncovered some rust that i cut out and replaced with new steel patches. I stripped the repainted the rims and replaced the old weathered tires. I wire wheeled the whole trailer, primed and then painted it. the color is an off the shelf hunter green, similar to what the trailer would have been. I left some of the bumps and bruises in the sheet metal to keep the vintage feel, but welded up extra holes and straightened any major issues. I rewired and replaced the taillights with a simple round signals to keep with the feel of the trailer.
I created a stencil for the original lettering on the tailgate and painted that on as well
I will eventually add the curved canvas top and bows that came with it after I clean them up a bit.
I think it looks pretty good behind the cruiser too. Maybe it is too nice to use now?
It will be in good company with my other Bantam and Converto trailers. Is it possible to have a trailer addiction as well as a cruiser one?
