So I have some rust areas that need attention on my LX450. There was some rust I found hiding under the cladding in the lower rear 1/4. I'm going to have that repaired, but before I do I'm wondering what else is lurking under that cladding.
I have been thinking of removing it all, I would imagine the amount of moisture, salt and mud that gets trapped back there will only accelerate the rust.
After removing all the cladding there will be alot of holes to have filled. and a paint job needed. I could either have someone do the filling of the holes and then have the entire truck painted for more money than I care to spend on a second vehicle being used as a wheeling/camping rig.
I came across this thread and think I'm sold.

Here are a few pics of what I'm thinking of doing.

Wouldn't know much about that....:flipoff2:
But I would rather get it now before it eats holes in my truck like that rear 1/4. Figure somewhere down the road I will pick up a southern 80 or something from out West like I wanted to at first, before I found this for under 5k.

Go for it, my tow rig has the rockers and some other parts coated with similar stuff, it holds up a million times better than paint does.

I would be concerned about rust underneath afterwards using a bedliner. That stuff is a pain to remove if you ever wanted to.

Now if you wanted to paint a flat paint do the body work yourself and paint it with a real auto paint with some flattener. I'm going to paint the 45 myself using my HF gun. I had really good luck with it painting my frame with that gun. As for the SEM rust sheild all you have to do is add some hardner and shoot it. No thinning required. I think they even have a tan.

I would do what I could to treat the rust, I wasn't looking at just rolling over the rust. That would be some fine hackery on my part.
I planned to treat the rust I was able to, and there's some metal fab that needs to be done on one of my rear quarters that I was going to have sent out.
The nice part about the roll on bedliner is it's very forgiving when it comes to not so great body work:doh:.
Not only that but it seems easier and neater then attempting to spray it myself, less time consuming, and it would hold off from scratches and woodland pinstriping:D.
I guess I should get prices on both though. One appealing factor in the bedliner is if I did the 80 I could easily match the trailer:hhmm:.

Rust never sleeps. When you think you have it all it comes back..... (Insert Evil Laugh Here)

I know you were going to properly treat the rust. I would just be concerned about what you missed. Paint is far easier to touch up is what I was getting at. If you were going to have the truck sprayed I'm sure it wouldn't be cheap unless you have a buddy that does it.

Get it all as clear of rust as you can. Then consider using a product such as "Rust Bullet" in those places where you suspect the rust might come creeping back. I've not used the stuff yet, but have a gallon of it waiting for warmer weather to use on my fj40 project.

I'm sorry that I didnt read the post, but I love the paint job. Is that an FJ60 color?

Edit: I read the thread now. I think that it will be nice to just use the single stage Dune Beige or whatever the color is. You can purchase some Durabak to match the paint and roll that along the bottom quarter of the truck.

For rust, if it is just surface rust or whatever, I recommend MagnetPaint or POR15 (Same thing, just more $). Thin it with some Xylene and hand paint the areas which are rusted. If you want to be thorough, get a detail spray gun, some cheap clothes and safety goggles and spray the underside rear quarters. There is also smooth finish Durabak which will do a good job absorbing future rock strikes, sand and salt from getting stuck back there.

(I'd wait till a hot summer's day to do it)

It's definately going to get painted that color in either paint or bed liner. Still just figuring out the best way to go about it. I like the DIY factor, and I own plenty of cheap clothes!

When are you painting yours? I have heard good things about the HF gun. Wouldn't mind seeing your results.

Hope to get to it some time this summer. I sitill have a bunch of metal wor and body work to get to. If you wanted to try out the HF gun swin by some time. I have plenty of chassis and other pieces that need to get painted black.

The hell with it, I'm doing it before the Fall Gathering......

Por15, you can go right over the rust if you want, 1000 times better than paint alone. Its great for areas that you can't get a grinder or sander into to remove the rust, it chemically changes the rust, and its gone, bed liner just covers it.

I'm not painting it due to rust.
I just like the look and think it would do more to protect the metal in the long run.

Take your skirt off and do it already. :flipoff2:

It will look cool. I would just be concerned about it fading and getting chalky

True, but a few different mudders have run it now for a few years with no fading.
I understand the concept of rust creeping back or around at somepoint and will deal with it then or find a donor 80 from outside of the rust belt.
