Hey guys,

Been a lurker for awhile. Started with wanting a fj62, then a lc100, and after hours/days/months of reading, research, etc… I’ve landed on a lc200 and I think I found one! I have a couple of photos of the undercarriage and am a little concerned about the rust. It’s a 2013 lc200 with 110k miles on it. Lived in NY for the first 5 years and then Oregon.

For what it’s worth, I live in north Idaho and we salt the roads here so I’m assuming anything I get is going to rust. Just wondering if I should worry or anything I can do to remove the rust and/or prevent more rust. Thanks guys and looking forward to joining the crew.

If only people cared to rust proof their trucks we would not be looking at these sad looking frames. And **** salt, by the way.

Re this truck - it is perhaps not the worst. I think there is a lot of dirt, too.

looks good to me, thats 3 years rust on a new truck where i live
thats within fluid film range, youll hardly notice it after

thanks guys. Makes me feel better about getting it. Honestly I just looked under my tundra and it looks the same. Haha. Salt roads suck.. need to do some research and ask some shops to figure out what to do about the rust and how to prevent it.

fluid film, crown, dry wax, or other

I love the smell of Fluid Film in the morning…
Horrible. I used FF one year, and never again. It dissipates after a while, but no need to suffer with it. Corrosion Free lasts longer and does not stink at all and I think the cost is similar or lower. They also sell very high quality sprayer with a variety of very good attachments.

Woolwax is thicker than fluid film and doesn't have the same smell.
That is what I have moved to.
But any of these products will help keep the rust from getting worse

I bought my rig and it has rust-- my Toyota mechanic says a lot of what you see is just the oxidized paint that is flaking...not the structural steel. I've been reading about "dry ice blasting" and it sounds like a great new technology. Either way, I plan to do surface rust removal and recoat with Corrosion Free or similar as I plan to keep truck a long time.

When I bought my 2015 in late 2018 with 50k it had minimal rust despite living on RI coast. Hardly anything, maybe a spot near trailing arm attachment. The only notable spot was the hitch frame crossmember under the bumper cover, only really visible when the cover was removed.

Cleaned and treated with Eastman rust encapsulator and their chassis paint. With Corrosion Free replied yearly the truck seems to be rust free now 6.5 years later.

That's nice to know. I was hoping to do something like this to the 2013 LC. Unfortunately I live in a place where they salt the roads.. so I need to figure out ways to keep as much rust off it as possible... I'm wondering if regular car washes will help? Some of the touchless ones in my area are always advertising "under mount flushing" for salt

crossing my fingers! I am going to have toyota do a pre-purchase inspection on it.. so we'll see what they say.

The truck spends most time in MA/NH which is the ground zero for road salt abuse. It is criminal basically.

I lightly wash undercarriage in winter but not too often. Corrison Free really has been holding up great. I noticed some corrosion on front brake splash sheild and on the exhaust bolts. Great otherwise. Some spots more subject to washing I like to hit with Amsoil Heavy Metal protector.
